A Mic’d Up Mitch Trubisky Has Love for Everyone and Other Bullets

It had been a while since I attended a Chicago Bulls game, but Tom Thibodeau’s team led by Derrick Rose and Taj Gibson did not disappoint.

Wait … what do you mean those guys aren’t members of the Bulls any more? Maybe someone can do a podcast explaining this.

  • A mic’d up Mitch Trubisky reveals how much love QB1 has for everyone:
  • I lost count of how many hugs and handshakes Trubisky handed out in that clip. There is no denying how much positive energy that guy has and brings to the field. And while there isn’t a statistic that can prove it, I think Trubisky’s vibes are permeating through his teammates. Isn’t that how leadership is supposed to flow?
  • When discussing the change from John Fox to Matt Nagy, we often found ourselves discussing the major difference in styles and how messages were sent. And after checking out a mic’d up Trubisky, I think that idea also can apply to the quarterback. Trubisky’s extroverted style is a stark contrast compared to the last quarterback the franchise hitched its wagons to as their franchise signal caller. All things considered, that’s probably not a coincidence.
  • Trubisky is quietly having a pretty awesome second half of the season. Since suffering back-to-back losses against the Dolphins and Patriots, Trubisky’s last seven games have been pretty solid. He has completed 67 percent of his passes, thrown for 1,466 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions, while posting a 94.8 passer rating. Extrapolated over 16 games, we’re looking at 3,351 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. This set of numbers are certainly encouraging.
  • The most encouraging numbers might be 7-0 … as in that’s the Bears record in Trubisky’s last seven starts. They’re rolling!
  • You can see why Akiem Hicks (finally) made it to the Pro Bowl this season:

  • Sherrick McManis has done well in his role filling in for Bryce Callahan as the Bears’ nickel corner:

  • It’s a small sample, but McManis has a 90.0 coverage grade via Pro Football Focus in 143 coverage snaps. That would put him at an elite level by PFF’s standards. Somehow, ex-Bear Marcus Cooper has a 90.4 coverage grade in 24 pass-defense snaps with the Lions. I didn’t see that coming.
  • Back to McManis, who played just 52.7 percent against the 49ers. San Francisco didn’t really test him the way I expected and he wasn’t on the field as much as I thought he would be, but that might have been decided on the Bears trying to match personnel to what the 49ers were putting on the field. That’s good coaching on the Bears part.
  • A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one:
  • I tried to tell you there was something fishy about that line.
  • The house always wins:
  • Time flies:
  • What the what?
  • I think the Bears (and the rest of the NFC North) dodged a bullet here:
