Steve Clevenger is out today with a strained oblique – indeed, he’s out for at least six weeks – but it doesn’t look like the Cubs are going to make a roster move. With an off-day tomorrow and Darwin Barney set to return on Tuesday, there isn’t much sense in shuffling someone up from Iowa for today’s game only. Instead, the Cubs will just go with 24, and get back to full strength on Tuesday.
Edwin Jackson goes for the Cubs today, and lets hope whatever grip issue plagued him early against the Brewers last time out has been permanently corrected. After the first two innings, he looked pretty good.
On the other side of the bump is a scuffling Tim Lincecum, who just isn’t the same guy he was two years ago. It’s sad, given how tantalizingly good he was, but that’s something that happens in baseball. He could, however, turn things around for today at least, and he’s facing the right team to do it. A free agent at the end of the year, Lincecum could stand to face a lot of teams like the Cubs before November rolls around.
The Cubs miss Buster Posey today, so maybe they can make it happen. A series split here, even as frustrating as the two losses have been, would be a relative success.
