The Bears’ Receivers Room Is Still Crowded as Heck and Other Bullets

Spicy chicken nuggets aren’t just back at Wendy’s, I would go as far as to say they are better than I remember. Unfortunately, it isn’t ideal to have spicy chicken nuggets for lunch on back-to-back days. Guess I’ll have to find something else to stuff my face with this afternoon.

  • Earlier today, the Bears waived rookie receiver Emanuel Hall. There was plenty of hype surrounding the Missouri product leading into the draft, so much so that it looked to be a steal when he spurned offers from other teams to sign in Chicago. I’m curious to see what Head Coach Matt Nagy says about what prompted the move at this point in the summer, as well as what the team’s next transaction could be. Stay tuned.
  • A crowded wide receivers room has one fewer prospect within its walls, but is still as busy as before. Hall’s departure leaves Allen Robinson II, Taylor Gabriel, Anthony Miller, Cordarrelle Patterson, Javon Wims, Riley Ridley, Jordan Williams-Lambert, Marvin Hall, Tanner Gentry, Taquan Mizzell Sr., Thomas Ives, and Joe Walker hanging around. The Bears could conceivably carry as many as seven receivers on its Week 1 roster. That seems like a lot of receivers, doesn’t it?
  • Robinson, Gabriel, Miller, and Patterson are virtual roster locks. Wims and Ridley feel safe. At this point, we’re already at six receivers on a 53-man roster. Could Williams-Lambert, Hall, Gentry, Mizzell Sr., Ives, or Walker do enough over the next three preseason games to make an impression and earn a roster spot? The player who probably has an edge at this point is Marvin Hall, who has special teams experience going back to his time with the Falcons, has flashed during training camp, and scored a touchdown in the preseason opener. Let’s keep an eye on him.
  • If you wanted to think outside of the box, moving Taylor Gabriel to a team that needed receiver help might be something worth considering. Hey, don’t give me that look! Every summer brings a surprising move that gives NFL fans pause and leaves them doing the confused head-tilt thing. But long story, short: I wouldn’t recommend it.
  • Mark Potash of the Sun-Times caught up with Gabriel, who talked about the adjustments he is making in his second year with the Bears and how much he is enjoying his time in Chicago. Quarterback Mitch Trubisky posted a 94.1 passer rating when targeting Gabriel last season, so he should probably hang around for at least another year with the Bears.
  • Should Chicago decide to fill the roster spot vacated by Emanuel Hall with a defensive player, I will be curious to see which offensive players take advantage of the opportunity.
  • In answering questions from fans, Larry Mayer’s choice of Khalil Mack for training camp MVP was a no-brainer. But it is worth noting that receivers Allen Robinson II and Javon Wims impressed him and stood out for the right reasons.
  • If Bears receivers are doing well, does that mean the quarterback is also doing good things? I’m asking for a friend…
  • I’ll be looking forward to this:
  • Chris Emma (670 The Score) sees opportunity on the horizon for Kerrith Whyte Jr, because his speed burst and ability to bounce a play outside. It will be harder to make a living running east-west in the NFL than it was in college, but Whyte certainly has a spark to his game. For what it’s worth, Whyte’s head coachspoke glowingly about the rookie running back who is part of a busy backfield.
  • Deon Bush is opening eyes, just as his rookie contract expires:

  • I don’t think it’s a coincidence that there has been a ton of praise for Bears defensive backs throughout the summer. Remember, Chuck Pagano, the defensive coordinator they hired to replace Vic Fangio, was a long-time secondary guru.
  • We’ve come a long way, haven’t we?
  • This is spectacular:
  • Coming later tonight:
  • This isn’t football related, but two of my favorite people linked up on a podcast:
  • Speaking of podcasts, the latest episode of Talkin’ Toros is a treat because we’ve got a schedule to talk about:
  • While basketball is on our mind, let’s check out the Bulls’ schedule for the upcoming season:
  • And since schedules were being dropped yesterday, MLB (for some reason) shared its 2020 slate in the middle of the dog days of summer. Seriously:
