Yesterday the Chicago Cubs recalled catching prospect Welington Castillo (whose name still has one too few “Ls” for my taste, but whateves), who will serve as the third catcher and bat off the bench for the rest of the year. Castillo is no doubt auditioning to be Geovany Soto’s back-up next year, which would allow the Cubs to save some cash – and Cubs fans some headaches – by not re-signing Koyie Hill.
Castillo leaves AAA Iowa, likely for good, with a .255/.317/.498 line. In the power-friendly PCL, that actually isn’t a very impressive line.
