The Cubs are Hip Surfers and Other Bullets

Ryan Dempster’s outing yesterday marked his 17th quality start of the season (at least 6 innings, and three earned runs or fewer), which is a pretty amazing stat for a guy with a 4.75 ERA on the year. It’s a testament to (1) how hard it can be to overcome severe early-season struggles, and (2) how low the “quality star” bar is set.

  • Mike Quade had this to say about Bryan LaHair’s prospects for finally becoming a big league regular: “You never say never. History may work against him, but to hell with history. He wasn’t hanging around Triple-A to hope that would be his lifetime work. There are a handful of guys who got here late. Let’s see how he does.” If this month is LaHair’s last shot to “make it,” and Mike Quade remains in charge, I will comfortably say “never.” The over/under on LaHair starts is 2, and the over/under on LaHair at bats is 10. That’s “how he’ll do.”
  • Speaking of Quade’s disincentive to play games a certain way in the best interests of the organizational future, he made this terrifying statement after saying that he will try to get Andrew Cashner complete innings of work when the young pitching returns: “But you’re trying to win baseball games and the situation may not present itself.” Yikes.
  • The Cubs won’t be making further comment on Carlos Zambrano, but Mike Quade called it a “disappointing situation,” and said, “I don’t know how that [situation] plays out. [Zambrano] still has something to offer and his numbers bear that out.”
  • The Cubs’ High A affiliate, the Daytona Cubs, has changed its logo to the hip bear to the right, commensurate with a change in uniforms. “The new logos also embrace our environment, our community, and Daytona Beach, much more so than the old one did,” Daytona GM Brady Ballard said. “The color scheme, the Florida-based aspects, the palm trees, the surfer – they all add some fun to it.” And no worries: for those of you who tattooed the old logo to your body to gain free admission (this is not a joke), the club will continue to honor the old logo promotion. But don’t go getting the new logo tattooed – the same promotion may not exist for the new logo.
