Yoenis CespeTRES Goes Deep Three Times, Ties Two Records

I’m not sure what the Phillies’ baseballs said to the Mets’ hitters, but revenge was exacted last night in the form of a punishing 14 runs, 20 hits, and seven homers. Leading the charge for the Mets was, naturally, Yoenis Cespedes.

He managed to knock in five runs last night on the strength of three – absolutely crushed – home runs and a double. Let’s take a look at the destruction:

Your browser does not support iframes.

Those three homers were Cespedes’ second, third, and fourth of the season, which ties him for second place overall (George Spring has hit five already). It also happens to be the second three-homer game of his career.

He’s now slashing a fantastic .250/.333/.688 (163 wRC+).

But more impressively, according to Statcast, these weren’t just regular old home runs. Take a look at their readings, via Statcast:

Home Run #1: 105.2 MPH, 411 Feet, 26 deg
Home Run #2: 109.3 MPH, 428 Feet 24 deg
Home Run #3: 108.3 MPH, 382 Feet 38 deg

Apparently this is only the third time in the Statcast era wherein a player knocked four “barrels” in a single game (counting his double):

A “barrel” is a batted ball whose combination of exit velocity and launch angle give the player at least a .500 expected average and 1.500 expected slugging percentage. Matt Carpenter and Steven Souza were the two others to previously accomplish the feat.

He also joined another list of noted sluggers – Ryan Braun (who probably really hates Nolan Arenado), David Ortiz, Kris Bryant, and Yasmani Grandal – as one of just five players to have four hits of 105 MPH or more in the same game (Statcast).

Naturally, he gets the crown:

And if you’re still looking for the reason the Mets were able to slaughter the Phillies, so. Noah Syndergaard may have your answer:
