Mitch Trubisky is Really Crushing on His New Coaching Staff and Offense

Maybe it’s the change of scenery that comes with a new coaching staff or the general optimism that comes with minicamp, but it sounds like Mitch Trubisky has changed:

Trubisky opened up during his first meeting with the folks at Halas Hall during the third (and final) day of the team’s three-day minicamp. Let’s comb through the highlights.

  • Trubisky had praise for the outgoing coaching staff late in his rookie season, but it pales in comparison to how he feels about Matt Nagy and the new offensive staff that comes with him: “I feel like these last three days, I’ve been coached more than I ever have. Just having a bunch of brilliant offensive minds around me, I’m just getting a lot of information. I’m trying to be a sponge, and it’s been a lot of fun working with those guys and learning as much as I can these last three days.” As Michael wrote yesterday, it’s on another level.
  • So even though Trubisky is getting the best coaching he has ever received just three minicamp practices into this new regime’s tenure, the second-year quarterback was quick to point out that how things went down last season weren’t all bad. “The experience from last year, there’s no substitute for it. I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Everything happens for a reason.”
  • After playing with kid’s gloves under the old coaching staff, it sounds like Trubisky has a little bit more freedom coming his way. “I feel like I have more leadership, more accountability this year and it’s more fun that way.”
  • There’s no need to re-hash the faults the last regime had regarding quarterback development. However, I’m a believer that every life experience – both positive and negative – is an opportunity to learn. Things weren’t great for Trubisky in 2017, but it sure sounds like he has taken something from what he learned from the last staff.
  • But seriously, Trubisky is really crushing on this new offensive coaching staff. “This is how exciting this is. We’re just doing the basics, and we’re trying not to get too far ahead, but Nagy pulls me over to the side and he’s like, ‘Alright, we just have that throw, but we’ve got two or three more plays off of that, and that will come going forward.’ We try not to get ahead of ourselves, but it’s cool to look into where we’re going, and knowing there are plenty of plays ahead and there’s a lot of exciting stuff that’s going to go within this offense that we haven’t gotten to yet.”
  • Trubisky used terms like “awesome,” “authentic,” and “enthusiastic” to describe his new head coach. And as you would expect, Trubisky seems excited about what’s coming ahead – even if he knows it’s all in the early stages. “We have so many options within each play and just the decisions I have at the line of scrimmage and post-snap and pre-snap are just going to give us a lot of options. We’ve just got to continue to use our personnel and the talent we’ve got on offense to spread the ball around and be an explosive offense.”
  • Ah, yes. The talent. Trubisky feels good about having Allen Robinson, Taylor Gabriel, and Trey Burton: “They’re awesome guys and very talented. I think we’re bringing the right people in.”
  • Trubisky went on to offer up an honest, refreshing, and encouraging response regarding how far along he is in learning the new offense he’ll be orchestrating: “I know a lot more than I did last year, but I definitely know everything.” Trubisky sounds like he is catching on quickly, but knows there is more to learn and seems eager to learn it.
  • And for good measure, Trubisky seems to have learned when to say the most quotable thing. “You just go one day at a time, hope for the best, continue to work hard and just realize it’s a privilege to be a Chicago Bear.”
