Seeing the Bears Give Back to the Community is Wonderful and Other Bullets

Good things can happen when athletes don’t stick to sports.

  • Here is second-year running back showing the kind of leadership skills you wish every professional athlete owned:
  • Cohen bought and delivered physical education/gym class equipment to Hampton Elementary in Greensboro, N.C., which comes two months after a tornado devastated the city and wrecked the school. Cohen is a North Carolina native, and while not from Greensboro, it says a lot about his character that he dug into his own pockets and took it upon himself to do something for a community that needed it.
  • So, yeah, we’re going to respectfully agree to disagree here Mr. Cohen. You’re more than “just a guy” for this effort:
  • Mitch Trubisky lifted his self-appointed ban on social media to share photos from his quarterback camp in his hometown of Mentor, Ohio:
  • You can read up on Trubisky’s quarterback camp in this piece by Mark Podolski of the News-Herald. There’s even a photo gallery, too.
  • And because the Bears weren’t done, here’s Sam Acho treating some youngsters to a movie night:
  • The Bears have been teasing a release of their new orange jerseys, and I’m totally here for it:
  • Over at the Bears’ official website, Larry Mayer explains why following Trubisky’s progress is the thing he is looking forward to the most when the Bears show up to training camp. While the focus has been on passing drills during OTAs and minicamps, attention tends to shift to the running game once players put the pads on. I, for one, am looking to see how the Bears balance what has been their strength the last two seasons with what the team believes will be a strength moving forward.
  • Mayer also offers an update on Johnny Knox, whose football career ended in 2011 when he suffered a gruesome-looking back/neck injury against the Seahawks at Soldier Field. It’s wonderful to read that Knox is healthy, walking and moving just fine, and is about to embark on his first coaching job as an assistant at Carmel High School. Good luck, to Mr. Knox and his future student-athletes.
  • Speaking of wide receiver health, Kevin White’s issues are something that the Bears hope will improve in 2018, writes Bleacher Report’s Justis Mosqueda. After watching GM Ryan Pace re-work the room, White faces an up-hill battle entering the final year of his rookie deal. The Bears have drafted playmakers in Trubisky, Jordan Howard, and Adam Shaheen at quarterback, running back, and tight end … but their first first-round pick has yet to pan out at wide receiver. Hence, the free agency spending spree and a draft class that featured two wideouts.
  • And to think, that group could’ve been even more crowded had the team re-signed Cameron Meredith, who is making quite the impression on Saints beat writer Joel A. Erickson:
  • Meredith is in a great place to make the Bears pay for their oversight and/or lack of faith in his knee’s health. Nothing like catching passes from Drew Brees to get your career back on track. Then again, the Bears could be perfectly fine with Allen Robinson, Taylor Gabriel, and Anthony Miller at the top of the depth chart making plays. But that group could be tested if some players get off to slow starts or if the injury bug rears its ugly head again.
  • Bears visit the Bills in Week 9 and it might be a battle of former first-round quarterbacks:
  • The Bears could end up facing rookie first-round picks who were taken in the most recent NFL Draft in back-to-back weeks if the Jets are playing Sam Darnold by the two teams’ Week 8 matchup, which comes before Chicago’s trip to Buffalo. Further, the Bears could see three of the first four quarterbacks taken in the draft if Josh Rosen happens to be starting for the Cardinals in Week 3.
  • From a selfish standpoint, I’d love to lock in Trubisky-Rosen, Trubisky-Darnold, and Trubisky-Allen matchups for Weeks 3, 8, and 9. Seeing how one of the best quarterback prospects from the draft class of 2017 fares against his counterparts from this year would be most intriguing. Seriously, sign us up for that.
  • While it’s on our mind, let’s take a brief look at the other quarterback opponents who the Bears will face: Four Super Bowl champions (Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, Tom Brady, Eli Manning), four No. 1 overall picks (Jameis Winston, Matthew Stafford, Jared Goff, Manning), and eight Pro Bowlers (Rodgers, Wilson, Winston, Brady, Stafford, Cousins, Manning, Goff).
  • If we’ve done our math correctly, that means the Bears will face a Pro Bowl quarterback in 11 of the team’s 16 games in the season to come. Good luck, Bears defense.
  • Could you imagine Walter Payton playing on a team that wasn’t the Chicago Bears? I’d rather not, but it could have happened:
