Belly Laughs in a Benz, Trestman’s Nightmare Fuel, Love for Acho, and Other Bullets

Bright sunshine on a frigid day remains the biggest tease known to man. Then again, it might take the promise of spring to get us collectively through hump day.

  • Sit back, relax, and let out a belly laugh or too:

  • Here are the six players who were given the Franchise tag before Tuesday’s deadline. 49ers K Robbie Gould, Chiefs EDGE Dee Ford, Cowboys DE DeMarcus Lawrence (second tag in a row), Falcons DT Grady Jarrett, Seahawks DE Frank Clark, and Texans EDGE Jadeveon Clowney. Teams and players have until July 15 to work out a long-term deal or the tagged player will end up playing on a one-year deal on their tag number. You can catch up on tag details and projected costs here.
  • NFL.com analysts Gregg Rosenthal and Chris Wesseling updated their list of 101 best free agents after the Tag deadline. All signs seem to be pointing toward the Bears not making major expenditures unless it’s to keep their own players. But still … I wonder what the Bears would do in a hypothetical situation if Adrian Amos and Landon Collins or Tyrann Mathieu have contract demands in the same price range. Would the team stick with its own? Would the front office make a harder push at a perceived upgrade? I’m not sure what the answer is or even if there is a right or wrong one, but I’ll be curiously watching to see how this market develops because the one certainty is that it’s a loaded market for members of the secondary.
  • Bears cornerback Bryce Callahan (28th) and safety Adrian Amos (34th) check in among the top-40 in this class and that’s worth keeping in mind. Chicago is in a bit of a pickle here, but I’m coming around on this being a good problem to have. The Bears plucked a fifth-round safety and an undrafted free agent cornerback and developed them into what you might figure to be popular commodities in the free agent market who will command significant pay raises. That’s a good thing because it means the Bears are doing something right. Moving forward, the Bears are left having to make a decision on rewarding their own or going back into the draft pool for their replacements. It won’t be an easy choice, but it’s better than the alternative (having to jump into free agency every time your team has a need, because it isn’t drafting or developing well).
  • And make no mistake about it: Adrian Amos will be a player other teams want to bring into their building:

  • JJ Stankevitz of NBC Sports Chicago runs down the list of Bears free agents, which extends beyond Amos and Callahan. We know GM Ryan Pace is working with a tight budget and that he needs to be thrifty with how he spends this offseason. What we don’t know is how he’ll work around the edges to bring back role players or maintain depth as a strength. The 2018 Bears took off because they had power in numbers. They’ll need to replicate that somehow in order to give themselves a fighting shot at repeating as NFC North champs.
  • I won’t rule out the possibility of Acho returning to the Bears on a different deal, much like what happened with cornerback Marcus Cooper Sr. last offseason. But if it is the end of the line for Acho in Chicago, then we would like to wish him good luck as he moves on:
  • This Marc Trestman video gave me nightmares:
