Two picks in the top 50! Hooray! Are we allowed to say hooray? Or elide over the fact that the two picks are barely in the top 50? Or the fact that the first pick doesn’t come until 43rd?
Bah, who cares. I feel like being positive this evening, as the Bears’ deeply disappointing 2019 season comes to a close before the calendar even flips to 2020.
Holding their own second rounder and that of the Raiders (Khalil Mack trade), today could’ve swung in a variety of directions for the Bears, but since it never feels right to root against the Bears when there isn’t a top ten pick at stake, the best hope for the day was old friend Vic Fangio and the Broncos coming through against the Raiders.
And with a two-point conversion stop with just 7 seconds left in the game, the Broncos did just that! Eat it, Raiders!
So with today’s Bears win, their own pick slides into the 50th overall slot, and their pick from the Raiders winds up number 43. It sucks not to be picking in the first round for the second straight year, but (1) it’s way better than not having your first pick until number 87, as it was last year; and (2) it’s potentially a good draft in terms of depth in that middle-of-the-second-round range.
Much more on the draft in the days ahead, of course. But for now, the picks are set, and the Bears top two will come in at 43 and 50.
