Ryne Sandberg Talks About His Interview with the St. Louis Cardinals

This, I assure you, will be difficult to read. Whether you felt Ryne Sandberg was the right choice to manage the Chicago Cubs or not, and whether you hoped he would get a chance somewhere, I doubt many of you hoped that chance would be with the Cardinals.

So, hearing him speak about his time meeting with them yesterday, and picturing him in Cardinal Red, is not particularly fun. Still, it’s newsworthy, so here you go:

  • On the fact of the interview, itself, and how it went, generally: “To even be considered by the St. Louis Cardinals, the defending champs, that speaks for itself. To have the opportunity for a managerial post like this is a tremendous compliment. I felt comfortable in the interview. I felt it went as well as it could go.”
  • On being a former Cub, theoretically managing the Cardinals: “I know the terrific history of the St. Louis Cardinals and what that franchise means from my 16 years of playing as a rival. The competition on both sides of that rivalry was respectful and at it’s best for so long. We had some battles, and I think as a competitor you had to respect the level that each team played. I’m a competitive person. I’m loyal to my uniform. I’m loyal to the organization that is going to give me a shot. If I come into Wrigley Field as an opposing manager, I probably would get an ovation to start, maybe in that first time. But if over time those turn to less of an ovation or boos, then I know that means I’m doing my job as an opponent.”
  • Sandberg wouldn’t offer specifics on how he would go about assembling his staff, but did share some thoughts: “What I can say and I told them this is that any manager who is hired is coming into a situation where, speaking of the staff, they just won a championship and were a big part of that championship. That speaks highly of the staff. That speaks the highest of the staff – it is a championship staff.”
  • Sandberg said the interview was just a little over two hours, which is obviously quite short. Maybe it was just a “first” interview? Maybe the Cardinals really aren’t all that interested? Maybe the Cardinals are hoping to get their foot in the door so they can bring him on as a bench coach?
