I’m not really sure why Carlos Zambrano would have hard feelings, given that he brought upon himself everything that happened (and he’s probably pretty happy where he landed), but he let folks know he doesn’t. Neat.
“I know I made a mistake in Chicago, I made a lot of mistakes, but I have a lot of good memories about the Cubs,” Zambrano said to reporters last night. “I accept my mistakes. I’m responsible. I don’t make excuses. I’m responsible for things that happened in Chicago, nobody else. It wasn’t [former GM] Jim Hendry, it wasn’t the team, it was me, Carlos Zambrano. That’s why I’m here. I wanted to play the whole time with the Cubs because that was the team that brought me up and the team that discovered me and gave me a chance and the opportunity. Things aren’t like that.”
After the fact, Zambrano usually did say all the right things, and that is no exception. Bygone are bygones and all that.
For now, Zambrano has nothing but positive things to say about Chicago and his time playing at Wrigley Field.
“I left half of my heart over there,” said Zambrano. “Chicago was always great to me and I do really appreciate all the attention and the criticism too because that made me get better. Nobody likes to be criticized but Wrigley was a great place for me.
“The atmosphere of baseball that you have in Wrigley, the passion of the fans is something that you probably don’t see in any other ballpark. But it was time to turn the page. I’m here now and I’m in a new place and I’m trying to enjoy the time here. So far I’m doing it.”
Zambrano added that he’s glad he’s not facing the Cubs this week (“too soon”), and instead hopes to face them in July when the Marlins come to Wrigley.
