The Bears are a Hot Ticket Right Now and Other Bullets

Some friends up north and I are monitoring the secondary market for Week 1’s Bears-Packers match-up, and wouldn’t you know it, the Bears (and Packers) are a hot ticket:

At the other end of the spectrum, I have a feeling that the game with the lowest get-in price (Washington-Arizona) is going to be wildly entertaining because that’s just how this works.

  • Mitch Trubisky is ready for Sunday night, too:
  • While I understand and accept Matt Nagy’s decision to sit his team’s starters on Saturday, I really would have liked to take a dive into comparing game tape of Trubisky and his Kansas City counterpart Patrick Mahomes going up against one another. And it’s more than just pitting Nagy’s new developing quarterback against his old one, but as Rich Campbell of the Tribune notes, Nagy’s move to Chicago figures to change how we view the first three quarterbacks (hey, let’s not forget about Deshaun Watson!) taken in the 2017 NFL Draft.
  • Nagy’s latest quarterback decision will have third-string quarterback Tyler Bray starting on Thursday and playing the whole game. All-Day Bray has a nice ring to it, if you ask me.
  • Tribune teammate Dan Wiederer suggests that Nagy’s honest answers regarding his unconventional move seem to reveal the kind of expectations are being set at Halas Hall. Maybe we’re still in a honeymoon period with the new coach, but there’s something refreshing about a coach who simply answers a question without hemming-and-hawing, deflecting, or acting as if an answer will compromise what is happening with the team. Because I have my moments as a cynic, I’m not 100 percent convinced this will continue throughout the complete duration of Nagy’s time in Chicago. But we’re certainly off to a good start.
  • Never have I ever thought about how a locker room was mapped out. I always figured players in the same position room were grouped together, but I found Nagy’s thoughts on the matter to be intriguing:
  • Rest? What rest? Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic catches up with the Bears’ specialists who didn’t get the luxury of getting a day off on Saturday against the Chiefs. Much like Saturday’s game, Thursday’s exhibition against the Buffalo Bills has major implications for the bottom half of the roster. Strong special teams performances can help a player on the roster bubble win a spot on the 53-man roster, while a poor showing could have a player searching elsewhere to continue their NFL career.
  • In addition to having linebackers, defensive backs, receivers, and others who could round out their special teams skills to make the roster, the Bears have specialists who are still trying to make the cut at their respective positions. Newcomer Tanner Carew is challenging Patrick Scales for the long-snapper position, while undrafted free agent rookie Ryan Winslow (who has been with the team since shortly after the draft) is aiming to upend incumbent punter Patrick O’Donnell. I feel as if the Bears will lean toward experience at each of these positions, but there is a reason the team brought in fresh blood to compete for a job.
  • Once special teams ace we haven’t seen much of this preseason is Tarik Cohen. But as Chris Emma of 670 The Score notes, the Bears are cautiously handling Cohen’s work load because of the versatility he brings to the table and his overall importance to the team. Getting Cohen the ball in space as often as possible should be a priority for the 2018 Bears, but the team shouldn’t overwork the second-year Swiss Army knife. The do-it-all running back/receiver/return specialist/Wildcat quarterback will certainly have his hands everywhere in the Bears offense and the increase in snaps will probably lead to some more explosive plays in the process.
  • Here’s hoping I don’t regret telling Michael to draft Taylor Gabriel over Anthony Miller:
  • I love good news on the injury front:
  • Ex-Bears offensive lineman Earl Watford is signing with the Browns, tweets NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo. The Bears tried dealing Watford before releasing him on Sunday, but no trade market developed.
