Around the League: GOAT Promo, Bills Changes, Another Lions Letdown, Last Link to Cutler Trade, More

The NFL Trade Deadline has come and gone. But in a week that has seen a ton of movement the last two days, I can’t get past the Cleveland Browns situation. They fired their Head Coach Hue Jackson and Offensive Coordinator Todd Haley, putting an end to a bitter and petty public beef, while also getting a head start on finding replacement candidates. For now, it’s Defensive Coordinator Gregg Williams of Bountygate fame serving as the interim HC with Freddie Kitchens (who I’ve never heard of until reading this) as the OC replacing Haley.

Maybe front offices are now more inclined to do it piece by piece than in one fell swoop, but here’s hoping this strategy doesn’t backfire and result in damaging potential franchise quarterback Baker Mayfield, who appears to be a dynamic talent just waiting to break out.

  • An online sportsbook put early odds on who the next Browns coach would be. Now, find the name least likely to fit:
  • If you answered Sean McVay, congratulations. Your prize is this video via Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio explaining why that’s not happening:
  • Your browser does not support iframes.

  • To be fair, there isn’t a team that wouldn’t want McVay as its head coach. But the Browns (as well as a number of other squads) are a day late and a dollar short on McVay. What a shame. You hate to see it.
  • This promo gave me chills:
  • And so did this re-make:
  • Thanks to losses by the Packers, Lions, and Vikings, the Bears are in first place in the NFC North. Isn’t life grand? To the victors go the spoils. To the not victors, a tough-to-shake feeling of disappointment. “This one stings, because we left a lot of plays (out there),” wide receiver Laquon Treadwell told the Pioneer Press. “We let the team down. We know that, and we’ve got to bounce back.”
  • This is one heckuva tease on the tweet here:
  • Nothing but class from ex-Lions receiver Golden Tate:
  • Speaking of receivers, the Bills (a.k.a. the Bears’ next opponent) signed one in Terrelle Pryor, who started the year playing for the Jets (whom you you might recall happened to be the Bears’ opponent last week).
  • The Bills are also set to bring in a quarterback who Bears fans should be familiar with:
  • While we have ex-Bears on the mind, Brandon Marshall will be in search of a new football home. The Seahawks released Marshall on Tuesday afternoon, which is a move that felt inevitable. Seattle trimmed Marshall’s playing time when a healthy Doug Baldwin returned to the lineup and when David Moore’s production took a step up. Marshall played on just two snaps in Seattle’s win against Detroit in Week 8, so it’s not as if the writing was on the wall for the six-time Pro Bowl wideout.
  • Here’s a fun fact about Texans receiver Demaryius Thomas, who was traded from the Broncos on Tuesday. Thomas’ time with the Broncos can be indirectly tied to the now-infamous Jay Cutler trade. The 2010 first-round pick the Bears sent to the Broncos was technically re-packaged as part of a deal that led to Denver getting multiple picks and eventually selecting Thomas (22nd overall), Tim Tebow (25th overall), and Eric Decker. Imagine knowing then what you know now about all the players involved in this deal.
  • With Thomas gone, Broncos lead executive John Elway is ready to usher in a new wave of talent at the position:
  • Good luck if you’ve got the Rams on the schedule moving forward because you’re going to need it:
