You have to go back to June 2010 for the last NBA Finals game played at the TD Garden in Boston. Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Ray Allen beat the Los Angeles Lakers to take a 3-2 lead in the series despite the late Kobe Bryant scoring 38 points for the Lakers in the losing effort. Now the current iteration of the Celtics will have the next two games (at least) to add to the lore of a building that has hosted the NHL All-Star Game (1996), three Stanley Cup Finals (2011, 2013, and 2019), and now it’s second NBA Finals since it opened in 1995.
“There’s a lot of history in this building, in this city. Should be an amazing atmosphere,” Stephen Curry said this week. “Anything is possible.”
Anything is possible. The Warriors may pick up where they left off and continue to look like the seasoned veterans they are. It’s also possible that the Boston Celtics have an answer for their Game 2 struggles, and they take command of the series on their home floor with one more in Boston set for Friday night. The Celtics can push the Warriors to the brink of elimination before the series shifts back to The Bay if they can sweep a pair of games in the next few nights.
Golden State will have something to say about that. After all, they’ve won at least one road game in each of its last 26 playoff series, an NBA record run that began in 2013. Curry was masterful in the close-out third quarter in Game 2. He’ll have to be every bit as good the next few nights if the Warriors want to leave Boston in the same or better position as they are now coming off of their Game 2 victory on Sunday night.
