Surprise! The Bears traded up one spot for the right to draft North Carolina quarterback Mitchell Trubisky. Didn’t see that coming? You’re not alone. The Bears didn’t even hold a private workout with Trubisky, and clearly worked hard to mask their interest.
The cost of doing business with the San Francisco 49ers was steep. Chicago traded the third, 67th, 111th, and a third-rounder in 2018 just to move up one spot to land one of the highest rated quarterbacks in the draft. Trubisky, who was the top-rated quarterback by Pro Football Focus, becomes the first quarterback the Bears have chosen in the first round since Rex Grossman (22nd overall) in 2003.
Trubisky threw for 3,748 yards, 30 touchdowns, and six interceptions in his only year as North Carolina’s starting quarterback.
So one day after GM Ryan Pace said the team had settled on three names, it appears as if the liked Trubisky more than anyone else at the top of their board.
