The weekend was loaded with impressive performances and wins down on the farm. That includes Billy McKinney reaching base in 10 straight plate appearances at one point, Mark Zagunis hitting a couple homers, and Ian Happ debuting with some power.
[Iowa] Donn Roach threw 99 pitches in his 7 innings on the mound. He allowed 3 runs on 7 hits, walked no one, and struck out one. Carl Edwards Jr. allowed no hits over the final 2 innings.
[Iowa] Matt Szczur finished 1 for 4 and stole 2 more bases in this one. He now has 16 in Iowa. Junior Lake (1 for 2, double, walk) stole his 4th bag.
[Iowa] Even though he had just one hit in this game, a double, John Andreoli did score 3 times.
[Tennessee] Felix Pena got off to a very good start in the first game. He struck out 6 over 4 innings while allowing just 3 hits and a walk.

[Tennessee] Jacob Hannemann doubled and finished 2 for 5 in the first contest. In Game Two he tacked on another double.
[Tennessee] Frank Batista pitched a very Frank Batista kind of game in Game Two. Over 6 innings he allowed 2 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks while striking out one. His first half ERA is 1.70.
[Myrtle Beach] Tyler Skulina pitched 4 no-hit innings, but thanks to 6 walks he gave up 3 runs (none of them earned).
[Myrtle Beach] Jasvir Rakkar continues to do well as the closer for Myrtle Beach. He threw 1.2 hitless innings and struck out 3 to wrap up this one.
[Myrtle Beach] Mark Zagunis homered twice (numbers 4 and 5) and finished 4 for 4. Jeimer Candelario hit his 5th homer in this game as well.
[Myrtle Beach] Chesny Young and Pin-Chieh Chen both had 2 hits. In the case of Chen, those 2 hits were doubles.
[South Bend] Jeremy Null did not have his best stuff as he allowed 3 runs on 5 hits over 3 innings. Ryan McNeil added 3 innings in which he struck out 3, but allowed 2 runs on 2 hits and 3 walks. Jordan Minch struck out 4 over the final 3 innings while allowing 3 runs (none of them earned) on 2 hits.
[Eugene] Adonis Paula doubled twice and finished with 3 hits in this one. Ho-young Son also doubled.
[Eugene] Justin Steele struck out 9 over 5 innings in this one. He allowed 2 runs, none of them earned, on 2 hits and 2 walks.

Iowa – In a rather soggy game, the Cubs lost 1-0. Tennessee – The Smokies scored a mountain of runs in the sixth, and they won 11-2 as a result. Myrtle Beach – The Pelicans were shutout 2-0 in the first game of the doubleheader, but they jumped to an early lead in Game Two and won it in eight innings 5-4. South Bend – This was a nail biter, but the Cubs came away with a 3-2 win. Eugene – Five errors really hurt the cause in this 10-4 loss. Arizona – The Cubs were shutout in their opener. The final was 4-0.
Performances of Note
[Iowa] A lengthy rain delay cut short this game for Dallas Beeler. He allowed a hit, a walk, and got 3 of his 4 outs via the strikeout. Yoanner Negrin (2.2 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 3 K) was the standout in a solid performance by the bullpen.
[Iowa] The Cubs had just 4 hits in this one, and none of them went for extra bases. Thanks to some walks, though, Matt Szczur, Rafael Lopez, and Chris Valaika each reached base twice.
[Tennessee] Billy McKinney stayed hot with a double, a homer (his 2nd), and a total of 3 hits.
[Tennessee] Albert Almora came off the bench to triple (his 3rd) and finished 2 for 2.
[Tennessee] Bijan Rademacher almost matched McKinney’s game. The left fielder doubled and homered (his 3rd) and finished 2 for 5.
[Tennessee] On the mound, Ivan Pineyro struck out 4 as he allowed just 3 hits over 6 innings. His groundout to flyout ratio was an excellent 11-2.
[Tennessee] Consistency continues to be the trouble for Corey Black. He struck out 2 in his 2 innings of relief, but he also allowed 2 runs on 2 hits and 3 walks.
[Myrtle Beach] The only extra base hit in Game One was a double from Victor Caratini.
[Myrtle Beach] Mark Zagunis did walk twice in Game One, and he also stole 2 more bases. He has 9 for the Pelicans.
[Myrtle Beach] Jonathan Martinez exited his Game Two start after 3 innings having already allowed 3 runs on 3 hits and 5 walks. He also struck out 4.
[Myrtle Beach] Josh Conway came on in relief and struck out 2 over 2 innings while allowing 2 hits and a walk. Juan Paniagua finished the game up with a hitless inning that contained 2 strikeouts.
[Myrtle Beach] Daniel Lockhart finished 2 for 3 in the second game. Jeimer Candelario had only one hit, but he did walk twice.
[South Bend] Gleyber Torres picked up another 2 hit day in this one. Cael Brockmeyer and Andrew Ely matched him in the hit column.
[South Bend] Brad Markey (2 IP, 1 K) and James Farris (1 IP, 1 H, 1 K) pitched very well in relief.
[Eugene] Oscar De La Cruz struck out 6 in his 4 innings on the mound, but he also gave up 3 runs (2 earned) on 5 hits and 3 walks.
[Eugene] Dillon Maples, working 2 innings of relief, walked no one and struck out 2. He allowed 4 runs on 4 hits, but none of those runs were earned.
[Eugene] The pitching debut of Jae-Hoon Ha was not a smooth one. Ha did strike out 2 in his inning on the mound, but he allowed allowed 2 runs on 4 hits and a walk.

[Arizona] Austyn Willis struck out 5 and allowed 2 hits and 2 walks in his 5 inning start. Erling Moreno followed with 2 relief innings in which he allowed a hit, a run, and a walk. He also notched a strikeout.
[Arizona] Joey Martarano had the only multi-hit day for the Cubs. He finished 2 for 4.

Iowa – The Cubs rallied late, but ultimately lost 14-8. Tennessee – Two big innings carried the Smokies to 9-2 win. Myrtle Beach – The Pelicans ended their first half on a high note with this 4-1 win. South Bend – The Cubs never trailed on the way to a 5-1 win. Eugene – A disastrous sixth inning put the Emeralds behind, and their late rallies came up just short. They lost 9-8. Arizona – Arizona had the day off.

[Iowa] Blake Cooper had the only scoreless appearance on the mound for the Cubs. He struck out 2 and allowed nothing in his one inning of work.
[Iowa] Arismendy Alcantara doubled and finished with 3 hits. Junior Lake also had 3 hits, and his 5th steal of the Iowa season.
[Iowa] Long balls were provided by Chris Valaika (his 4th) and Rubi Silva (his 6th).
[Tennessee] Ryan Williams pitched another strong game for the Smokies. The 2014 10th round draftee (who was drafted as a senior and signed for an even thousand bucks) only struck out 2, but he held the damage to one run on 4 hits and a walk.
[Tennessee] Neil Ramirez, on a rehab assignment, struck out the side in the seventh.
[Tennessee] Stephen Bruno doubled and finished with 3 hits in this game. Billy McKinney also doubled.
[Myrtle Beach] Daury Torrez gave up a first inning run, then cruised through the sixth. He gave up just the one run on 4 hits and 2 walks while striking out 5.
[Myrtle Beach] Chesny Young, Pin-Chieh Chen, and Jeimer Candelario all finished with 2 hits for the Pelicans. Chen also stole his 9th base.

[Eugene] Jose Paulino pitched 5 shutout innings, but in the sixth the wheels started to come off. He finished having allowed 3 runs on 5 hits over 5.2 innings with 7 strikeouts.
[Eugene] Most of the nine runs scored against Eugene in the sixth came off Alex Santana. After allowing 6 runs on 6 hits over a third of an inning, his ERA stands at 40.50. Corbin Hoffner finished the up the game without drama.
[Eugene] Varonex Cuevas, playing first base, doubled and led Eugene with a 4 for 4 day at the plate.
[Eugene] Ian Happ continued his campaign to make his stay in the Pacific Northwest a short one with another home run. He finished 2 for 4 with a double, his 2nd homer, and a walk.

Mike Olt has reported to Tennessee for a rehab assignment, and he came out swinging. On Saturday, playing third base, he doubled and tripled in addition to striking out twice. He followed that up with a double, two walks, and two strikeouts on Sunday.
