Why Resetting the Bears’ Quarterback Room Was Necessary and Other Bullets

Mitch Trubisky is officially in the fold, so let’s re-visit some highlights from the quarterback of the future:

  • A complete overhaul of the quarterback position – and not just a new starter, mind you – felt necessary for the 2017 Bears. Rich Campbell of the Chicago Tribune previews the position, and explains why the hard reset was necessary. Take note of how each new face has a different role in the room. Mike Glennon is the Week 1 starter, a player who will take on an immediate leadership role as he attempts to acclimate himself to a new situation and prove himself as a capable quarter. Mitch Trubisky is the wet-behind-the-ears quarterback of the future doing everything from soaking up information and learning the position’s nuances to commanding the huddle and building a rapport with young players and veterans alike. Even Mark Sanchez, who the team values as a No. 2 quarterback and a mentor for Trubisky, has a specific niche carved for him. This leaves Connor Shaw as the odd-man out in the big picture, but he’ll serve his role as camp depth quite well.
  • Kevin Fishbain gives a look at what’s happening with the Bears’ outside linebackers over at Pro Football Weekly. The pass rushing tandem of Pernell McPhee and Leonard Floyd represent of the most important pieces of the team’s defense for the coming season. Both players missed time due to injuries last year, so it’s fair to suggest that their health will dictate how well that unit (and the rest of the defense) will perform in 2017.
  • Adam Jahns of the Sun-Times shares who he believes are the 10 most important players who could lead the team to a successful 2017. Nothing speaks to the roster turnover like seeing only two players from the 2016 list make it again in 2017.
  • If you’re a fan of visuals, the team’s official site has a photo gallery featuring each of the 15 linebackers (inside and outside) who are in camp.
  • ESPN Chicago’s Jeff Dickerson offers up the juiciest story lines that will be a primary focus during Bears camp. What happens in the quarterbacks room and the development of Mitch Trubisky will take center stage because the team seems to be more focused on the future than the present. But let’s not totally look past the here-and-now. Dickerson highlights veterans such as tight end Zach Miller, linebacker Lamarr Houston, and cornerback Kyle Fuller as players who could be on the roster bubble and thus playing for a 2017 roster spot in Chicago.
  • Could another Joey Bosa scenario be unfolding with a 2017 first-round draft pick? It’s possible, writes ESPN’s Dan Graziano, who explains why rookie hold-outs are en vogue again and which rookies could be kept out of action this summer.
  • As you know by now, Trubisky won’t be one of them. And you can see why the Bears targeted him as the draft’s top quarterback prospect:
  • The Vikings will have a new return ace after Cordarrelle Patterson left for the Raiders in free agency.  Special teams coach Mike Priefer tells Sirius XMNFL Radio that he has been lobbying head coach Mike Zimmer to allow rookie running back Dalvin Cook to return kicks. Cook was the team’s second-round pick in April and one of the highest graded players at his position after being one of college football’s best running backs during his career at Florida State. However, Priefer might not get his wish because Cook could beat out free agent Latavius Murray to take over Minnesota’s lead back responsibilities, which would make him less likely to be used in special teams.
