The Panthers are Trading Brian Burns to the New York Giants

The Carolina Panthers are sending star pass rusher Brian Burns to the New York Giants in a trade this afternoon. Ian Rapoport confirmed the trade and extension for Burns, but local Panthers beat reporter Sheena Quick was the first to report that the two sides were close to a deal this afternoon.

The Giants land Brian Burns in a trade with the Panthers

Quick reported that the two sides were close earlier this afternoon, but they had to work out an extension for Burns. That deal is done, and it will be a five-year deal worth $150 million max with $87.5 million in guaranteed money.

In addition to the contra—which will make Burns the second highest-paid edge rusher—the Giants are sending the Panthers second—and fifth-round picks.

It was a weird ending to the Brian Burns tenure in Carolina. The two sides failed to get a deal done, and Carolina reportedly turned down multiple first-round picks from the Rams in a trade offer for Burns 16 months ago. It’s another bad look for the Panthers.

The Giants land a star pass rusher to pair with Kayvon Thibodeaux and Dexter Lawrence on their defensive line, which should soften the sting of losing Saquon Barkley to the Eagles this morning.
