With all my focus yesterday on the Cubs’ home opener and the outstanding Shota Imanaga debut, I missed word that one of the last few free agents hanging around out there had signed.
Mike Clevinger is returning to the White Sox:
Clevinger, 33, was formerly an exceptional starting pitcher with the Guardians who then dealt with some health and performance issues after a trade to the Padres. He bounced back to a solid year in 2023, but because of the health/struggle questions from the preceding two years, and probably the domestic violence investigation last year, he did not seem to have a robust market.
With the White Sox, Clevinger will almost certainly be viewed as a midseason flip candidate if he’s pitching well, and if there is a market out there for his services.
