Quintana Settling in for Cubs, Brewers Change Time, Bryants Are Nice, and Other Bullets

I’m on the road back to Columbus today, so I’m gonna fire off these Bullets from a Taco Bell somewhere in Indiana. I often stop at this location because of its geographic fit within my trip, and every time it cracks me up: they’ve got free WI-FI here, but the “connect” button is not actually a button. It’s just an image that is not clickable. There is no actual way to connect to the internet. I keep thinking one of these times it’ll be fixed, but here I am, two years later, and it’s still going strong.

Thank goodness for tethering.

I had a blast at Social Media Night last night. It was great to meet so many new people, and also so many people I know as names on a screen … and now they have faces! Lovely faces! The Cubs did a great job this year, and I’m already looking forward to the next one.

  • Jose Quintana had his third straight solid outing for the Cubs, holding down the Mets, laying down a couple bunts, and embarrassing Jose Reyes:
  • Quintana’s season FIP (3.87) is now only a few clicks higher than his career mark (3.53), which is actually about what you’d expect in the new offensive environment. And with the Cubs, it’s an even better 3.64, together with an ERA that is now under four – 3.88. There have been ups and downs in his short time with the Cubs, but, on the balance, he’s been the guy the Cubs hoped they were getting: a solid 6/7 inning starter who gives the team a chance to win every time out, and occasionally drops a fantastic outing.

  • Lots of picture of Jake Arrieta (hamstring) throwing on flat ground at Wrigley Field yesterday, but no update on his timeline for return.
  • Kyle Schwarber is a really good dude, even setting aside the baseball stuff:
  • More details coming on this shortly, but the postseason registration process is now open with a $50 refundable deposit:
  • Brewers gonna Brewer:
  • I’m not sure I ever fully participated in the thank you note thing for our wedding, and yet Kris Bryant and his wife Jessica are sending out hand-written notes to the very-likely-hundreds of Cubs fans who sent them gifts. Obviously it was very nice of Cubs fans to send them wedding gifts, but also good on the Bryants for being classy folks. (And also: thanks, The Wife, for I think taking care of that for us 11 years ago … )
  • The BN crew had a great time at Social Media Night, and we even got a cool pic of three of the four of us:
  • All that relative optimism about the Bears, and … wham:
  • A heads up: the MLB Shop is having a two-day end of season sale with up to 40% off and free shipping. I have perused the Cubs gear and I do see some shirts that I didn’t previously see on sale when they ran their specials. Also:
