Trubisky Could Start More Than Glennon, All-Rookie Team Predictions, The 2018 NFL Draft, and Other Bullets

Important dates are on the horizon for the Chicago Bears:

It’s almost time for the Bears’ rookies to get acquainted with Halas Hall and their new lives with a franchise in need of an infusion of young talent.

  • ESPN’s Dan Graziano makes a bold prediction with regards to the Bears’ quarterback position, believing that Mitch Trubisky will most likely lead the team in starts in 2017. This would be quite the change of pace, especially considering the franchise’s very public stance in support of Mike Glennon as the team’s starter. But what if Glennon struggles? Or gets hurt? There is an avenue in which Trubisky plays a lot in 2017 … but it probably means that things have gone terribly wrong.
  • Looking back at the quarterback of the past, is it possible that Jay Cutler was too smart for his own good? Peter King provides some big picture perspective on Cutler’s time in the NFL in his MMQB column. Cutler’s career was mired in disappointment, but it’s fitting that his best game in King’s eyes was a loss in which Cutler was battered to the tune of an estimated 20 hits by Lions defenders in a game where Cutler completed 28 of 38 pass attempts and threw no interceptions. Cutler performing despite being peppered by a relentless defense is the Cutler era Bears in a nutshell.
  • Adam Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times believes wide receiver Tanner Gentry is a player to watch starting Friday at the start of the Bears’ rookie mini-camp. John Fox’s team has had at least five undrafted free agents start games over the last two seasons, and Gentry could put himself in a position to be added to the list.
  • If all else fails, the Bears could piece together a competitive rec-league basketball team:
  • All jokes aside, the tight end room might be the most intriguing position group at Halas Hall right now. Returning starter Zach Miller has been joined by a free agent (Dion Sims), a highly touted draft pick (Adam Shaheen) , two former basketball players (Johnson, Franko House), and a handful of newish faces. I expect the competition to be fierce.
  • Over at NFL.com, Bucky Brooks puts together his projected All-Rookie team for 2017. Unfortunately, it doesn’t feature any Bears players. It does feature two players from the NFC North as the Minnesota Vikings are represented by running back Dalvin Cook and center Pat Elflein. Brooks’ list features a handful of players who were previously tied to the Bears in the days, weeks, and months leading up to the draft. Players such as quarterback Deshaun Watson, wide receiver Zay Jones, defensive lineman Solomon Thomas, and safety Jamal Adams are among the players Brooks expects to stand out in 2017. Hopefully, the year-end list features a few Bears players.
  • Sticking with the Vikings for a moment, they signed free agent receiver Michael Floyd to a one-year deal. Floyd has a first-round pedigree, a 1,000-yard season under his belt, and loads of potential. However, Floyd was cut by the Cardinals last year after a drunk driving arrest. He ended the year with the New England Patriots.
  • Because it’s never too early to look at the 2018 NFL Draft, Pro Football Weekly offers up four offensive linemen to keep an eye on this coming college football season. With the Bears out of the quarterback market for next year’s draft, the team would be wise to scout some linemen who could protect the organization’s top asset.
  • If you’re looking ahead (but not that far ahead), take note that the Bears will play five of the teams projected to be among the 10 best offenses in 2017. Perhaps they should have done more to improve the defense through the draft and free agency.
  • Chances are the Bears will get a good look at Blaine Gabbert during the preseason. Gabbert signed a one-year deal with the Arizona Cardinals to compete for their backup role. Chicago will travel to Arizona for the second week of the preseason. The former first-round pick hasn’t been great. And it makes you wonder if he and his career 71.5 passer rating can get a job, why couldn’t Colin Kaepernick or Jay Cutler do the same?
