Training camp isn’t just about wishing your favorite team’s best players were sealed in bubble wrap while praying the team makes it out without suffering too many season-crippling injuries.
And we were briefly reminded of that on Thursday when Mitch Trubisky lit up Twitter after a deep-ball connection with Tanner Gentry.

Trubisky with a long TD pass to rookie Tanner Gentry, who was actually covered well by Sherrick McManis. Nice throw, nice catch. #Bears

Wait, what? With whom?
Let’s not forget about Tanner Gentry now that we’ve entered training camp. Even though the Bears didn’t select a wide receiver in the 2017 NFL Draft, the team plucked Gentry as an undrafted free agent. (Aside: You’ll want to get acquainted with the group of undrafted free agents in camp by reading this, and get to know which ones could make the 53-man roster here.) The Wyoming product put up big numbers on campus and helped put quarterback Josh Allen – one of the top quarterback prospects who could be available in the 2018 draft – on the map. Gentry’s next challenge is to make a name for himself at Bears training camp and perhaps help out one of the Bears’ quarterbacks in the process.
For what it’s worth, Gentry impressed the Bears during rookie mini-camp, and could hang around deep into the preseason because of his potential as a reliable deep threat. The Bears have a ton of moving pieces at the receiver position, and anyone suffering an injury in camp could open the door for a player like Gentry.
Gentry could be a popular sleeper pick to make the 53-man roster, but only because of his status as an undrafted free agent. Go back and check out Gentry’s scouting profile at Pro Football Focus, and you’ll probably finish it and wonder why he wasn’t drafted in the first place. It would be come as a pleasant surprise if Gentry could establish himself early in camp, especially with a player like Trubisky who will be looking to find a connection with a reliable receiver to get himself going. And it sure would be nice if that player was young and possessing upside like Gentry.
Not to be out-done, Mike Glennon showed he can make some throws in practice:
