John Fox Is Feeling the Pressure, Hearing the Calls to Replace Mike Glennon at QB and Other Bullets

The Green Bay Packers weren’t the only ones scoring at will against the Chicago Bears on Thursday:

You know things aren’t going your way when a candy bar is roasting you on Twitter.

  • Tony Dungy, who coached Peyton Manning and won a Super Bowl with the all-world quarterback while with the Indianapolis Colts, doesn’t understand what the Bears are doing at the quarterback position. The two-time Super Bowl winning head coach told Pro Football Talk that Trubisky should be getting on-the-job training as the starting quarterback after seeing how he performed in training camp and during the preseason. Throw in what GM Ryan Pace gave up to acquire him as a consideration, and Dungy sees no reason not to go to the rookie.
  • Dungy is no stranger to playing a high draft pick early, recalling his experience when the team drafted Trent Dilfer with a top-10 pick in the 1996 NFL Draft. “We sat down, Rich McKay and I and the ownership, and we said, ‘We’re going to play Trent Dilfer for two years. I don’t care if we don’t win a game, I don’t care if we go to the Super Bowl,” Dungy told PFT. “He’s going to play, because we have to find out if he justifies this sixth pick. Is he our guy?’ And we were all on board with that. And that’s what it’s got to be.”
  • In any case, the calls for Trubisky will become louder and clearer until he makes his debut. ESPN Chicago’s Jeff Dickerson writes there is no excuse to stick with Glennon after seeing his performance in the first four games of the season. David Haugh of the Chicago Tribune adds that Glennon’s performance is begging for Trubisky to step into the lineup and start the on-field developmental process. Hub Arkush of Pro Football Weekly also writes in hopes the Glennon era comes to an end, adding the only way for John Fox to save his job is to take away Glennon’s.
  • John Fox is 1-4 against the Packers in his three years in Chicago, with an average margin of defeat of 15 points in three of the four games. Fox has coached 36 games since joining the Bears, and Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic notes eight have been losses of 20 or more points. To put it differently: 22 percent of the games Fox has coached with the Bears have been lopsided losses.
  • Meanwhile, Benjamin Allbright shares that Fox’s record without Peyton Manning has dropped to 91-105 … which comes out to a .464 winning percentage. That’s dangerously close to Marc Trestman’s .404 winning percentage in his two years with the Bears.
  • It’s unfortunate that Tarik Cohen – who played just 26.4 percent of the team’s offensive snaps on Thursday – didn’t get a chance to show off his skills in front of a nationally televised audience despite the Packers playing without a pair of defensive starters. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports GM Ryan Pace’s pursuit of the elusive running back began when his top southeastern scout declared Cohen (who played his college ball at North Carolina A&T) was his favorite player to watch, beating out some talented SEC prospects in the process. Cohen was one of a handful of non-FBS players from small schools the Bears chose in the 2017 NFL Draft, but he’s the only one who has made a significant impact through four weeks.
  • It’s taken 84 years, but the Packers finally have overtaken the Bears and have a series lead in the all-time head-to-head matchup. Green Bay improved to 95-94-6 against the Bears. Aaron Rodgers has a 16-4 record against the Bears, while the Packers are 35-11 against the Bears since 1992 when Brett Favre took over under center.
  • Glennon wasn’t able to capitalize on the momentum he and the offense built by leading a near-flawless two-minute drill with a touchdown pass to Kendall Wright right before halftime. During that drive, Glennon completed 6 of 7 passes, threw for 72 yards, and posted a 149.1 rating. In the second half, Glennon was 11 of 17 for 93 yards, and an interception – which adds up to a 54.3 passer rating. Ewww.
  • But hey, at least Glennon tried throwing it downfield a handful of times:
  • The Bears had some interesting twists in Thursday’s starting lineup. Kevin Fishbain made note of Kyle Fuller starting at right cornerback across from Marcus Cooper. That meant Prince Amukamara (who missed the first two games of the season with an ankle injury) was coming off the bench. Fuller played 50 of 52 total snaps, including 28 of 30 passing snaps. As a point of comparison, Amukamara played just 27 snaps – or 51.9 percent of the team’s defensive plays. Since returning to the active roster, Amukamara has played just 55.2 percent of the Bears’ defensive snaps.
  • Another noteworthy lineup change was on the offensive line, which was at full strength for the first time all season as Josh Sitton returned to the lineup. However, the Bears ditched their offseason plan to start Sitton at right guard and Long on the left side – at least for one game. Long was the team’s starter at right guard, while Sitton started at left guard with Cody Whitehair at center – a lineup that hadn’t been together since Week 10 of the 2016 season.
