Miller Walks, Trubisky’s Learning Curve, Cohen’s Adjusted Stats, Diddy Talks Ownership, and Other Bullets

Zach Miller nearly lost his leg, and now he’s walking:

A post shared by Zach Miller (@zmiller86) on

Miller suffered a gruesome knee injury in an October loss against the New Orleans Saints while securing a touchdown catch that was ultimately overturned by the NFL’s replay officials. Since then, Miller has had eight surgeries and finally returned to Halas Hall last week, where he caught up with teammates, coaches, and the assembled media.

We’re all pulling for No. 86 as he pushes through the rehab process.

  • What a difference a week makes. Six days after putting together their best performance of the year, the Bears pulled out a dud … and it showed in the post-game grades. JJ Stankevitz of NBC Sports Chicago pulls no punches in assessing Sunday’s performance, giving D grades to the quarterback, running back, wide receiver, tight end, offensive line, secondary, and special teams units. And to think, that’s not even the worst of the worst. That’s saved for coaching.
  • Speaking of coaching, Rick Morrissey of the Chicago Sun-Times believes John Fox reverting to his conservative ways hurt any progress Mitch Trubisky might be making. Saturday’s game wasn’t just a step back in results, but also in game planning and scheming. Morrissey (and anyone else who watched the team’s Week 14 win against the Bengals) saw the game against the Lions as another opportunity to let Trubisky loose. And to do it against a division rival pushing for a playoff spot could have possibly given us a better idea of what might come down the line. Instead, the powers that be unleashed a garbled game plan that went nowhere fast.
  • Over at WGN, Larry Hawley provides a bit of perspective regarding Trubisky’s three-interception game. Red zone picks are a killer, but Trubisky did lead drives to get there in the first place. So while the interceptions aren’t going to leave anyone feeling good about his game, those throws should serve as a coaching point for this staff leading into Week 16 against the Cleveland Browns.
  • Adam Jahns of the Sun-Times outlines the latest curve in Trubisky’s development, noting that Fox can’t hide behind Trubisky’s once-sterling third-down numbers after his interception. However, Trubisky did make some impressive throws. It was an uneven game for the rookie, which is disappointing considering the quality of opponent. Yes, the Lions are in the thick of the playoff hunt. But that defense entered Sunday in the bottom third of teams defending the run and pass. The Bears offense should have been able to move downfield against that Lions outfit.
  • Things could have been better for the Bears, if only they were able to limit their penalties. Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic notes there have been nine times in which Tarik Cohen has had a run, catch, or return of 10+ yards wiped away because of a penalty. Imagining Cohen’s season without crippling penalties is what dreams are made of, and frankly, make me feel better about the rookie’s future in Chicago. While the fourth-round pick has impressed with some big plays, it feels as if this staff hasn’t gotten the most from him. If the best is yet to come from a player as electrifying as Cohen, then you can count me as a buyer of The Human Joystick’s  stock for 2018 and beyond.
  • In an alternate universe, these guys are doing this for the Bears:
  • Green Bay Packers wide receiver Davante Adams was put into concussion protocol after taking a vicious hit from Carolina Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis on a block after an interception. It is the second major hit Adams has taken this season that forced his removal from the game. Adams went to Twitter to discuss his displeasure and frustration. Davis responded in kind by tweeting: “I understand your frustration and I do apologize for the hit. In no way was I trying to hurt you. My first instinct was turn and make a block. In all sincerity I do apologize. I truly respect you as a player and I made a mistake!”
  • Off the field, the Panthers will be up for sale after the season ends and some high-profile names want in:
