ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the Green Bay Packers are signing wide receiver Davante Adams to a multi-year contract extension. Schefter’s sources indicate the new deal will be for four or five years at about $14 million per year. What. A. Bummer.
Adams was scheduled to hit free agency this offseason and was in a prime position to cash in on a breakout year (perhaps even, as we had hoped, with the Bears). The 6-1, 215-pound Adams led the Packers in catches (74), targets (117), receiving yards (885), and touchdowns (10) en route to being the 14th-highest-graded receiver according to Pro Football Focus. Adams’ stock really took off after Aaron Rodgers went down with his collarbone injury and became Brett Hundley’s top target.
You could argue Adams’ best performance was turning Hundley into a semi-competent quarterback. Hundley posted a 109.9 passer rating when throwing to Adams this season, which is a major up-tick compared to his season-long 71.5 rating. And to think, it all started in Week 10 when he caught five passes for 90 yards and a touchdown against the Bears. Adams averaged six catches, nine targets, and 80 receiving yards in his final six games of the year – five of which were started by the Packers’ backup.
Now, the Bears will not only have to face Adams twice a year for the foreseeable future, they’ll no longer have a shot of signing him, themselves, in the offseason.
With more cap space than nearly any other team in football, an oft-injured and underperforming wide receivers room, and a rookie quarterback constantly searching for someone to get open down the field, Adams could’ve made a lot of sense for the Bears. Alas, he is no longer an option and I am supremely disappointed. And, no, when I saw this news, I definitely didn’t say “fudge.”
