One Encouraging Mitch Trubisky Statistic Further Explains His Growth and Other Bullets

Sorry, Brett, I didn’t win the Mega Millions. We’re not billionaires. But at least I’m still here to push through Bullets.

  • Does anyone remember when Mitch Trubisky was having issues throwing inside the pocket? Well, things are changing:
  • The only way for Trubisky to make big strides in his development was to improve in the pocket. His ability to extend plays and create with his feet outside the pockets hasn’t ever been in doubt, but his inaccuracy inside left a lot to be desired. Trubisky has been better in that area lately and you can see it with his improved footwork and mechanics. Seeing Trubisky among the best on the list above is one of the most encouraging things to happen in the first five weeks. Let’s see if he can keep it going.
  • Khalil Mack spoke with the media for the first time since suffering an ankle injury that limited him in the Bears’ Week 6 loss to the Dolphins:
  • Not only was that loss a gut-punch that put a dent int he Bears’ playoff odds, it was one that the players seemed to have trouble grasping. Even Mack said he didn’t realize how many missed tackles there were until afterward. But it sounds like Mack and his teammates think that was just a blip on the radar. “I’m very confident that was an aberration. That definitely was an aberration, we’ll go with that word. We’re looking forward to this week.”
  • There will be a shakeup in the Patriots starting lineup with right tackle Marcus Cannon ruled out with a concussion. Cannon, a second-team All-Pro in 2016, was limited to 50 snaps in Week 6 against the Chiefs and was relieved by LaAdrian Waddle to close out the game. Waddle figures to get the start in Week 7 and will likely see a ton of Mack if the Bears’ top pass-rusher can play an extended snap count.
  • In typical Patriots fashion, there are a ton of players listed as questionable heading into Sunday’s game:
  • Rob Gronkowski has been battling through an ankle injury for some time, but the back injury seems like a new twist. Gronk’s connection with Tom Brady is strong, but the Patriots have so many weapons it’s hard to focus on trying to stop one.
  • I feel like the headline in this Kevin Fishbain piece in The Athletic says everything you need to know about this Bears-Patriots matchup: “Don’t overthink it: How the Bears plan to take down Bill Belichick.” That Offensive Coordinator Mark Helfrich says game-planning for Belichick offers “no sense of joy” is a microcosm of what it’s like being a coordinator in the league going up against Belichick. You can dream about coaching in the NFL, and then you have to go up against that guy. I can’t imagine anyone dreaming about that.
  • Figuring weather into the equation isn’t something I do until late in the week because you know Chicago can experience four seasons in one day depending on the time of year. Scott Spratt of Pro Football Focus dissects some of the potential weather impact with an eye on how it could tweak things in fantasy football. Spratt has us keeping an eye on Chicago because wind is something that could be a thorn in the Patriots passing game that potentially drops the value of Brady and top targets like Julian Edelman and Josh Gordon. But since I’ve seen Brady put up big numbers in bad conditions, I’m not sure I’m willing to buy into this angle. Maybe that’ll change when I step outside and get a feel for the conditions.
  • Love seeing stuff like this from the Bears:
  • Timing is everything:
  • If Nick Chubb is available in your fantasy league, I’d suggest picking him up because he has the most upside of any Cleveland running back on their active roster after they dealt Carlos Hyde to the Jaguars on Friday.
  • I’ve got college football on the mind today and I’m just hoping that my alma mater can do the thing with the winning for a change. My beloved Salukis are on a five-game losing streak and haven’t been the same since halftime of their loss at Ole Miss. Maybe Homecoming being led by Jason Seaman – the SIU Carbondale grad who was the teacher whose heroic actions during a school shooting in Indiana saved lives – can get things headed in the right direction.
  • Elsewhere, college football rivalries are wild:
  • With the Bears not having a first-round pick and Trubisky playing well, we haven’t obsessively been watching college football as we have in recent years. And haven’t had too many calls for the Bears to dive into the draft for a potential replacement. Yahoo!’s Pete Thamel checks in with some NFL scouts and dives into the top quarterback prospects who could be available in the upcoming draft, led by Oregon’s Justin Herbert. We might have to come back to this list later once we find a feel for some potential mid-round values. But for now, it’s out-of-sight, out-of-mind.
