Anthony Miller Makes a Pitch for a Former Memphis Teammate and Other Bullets

Happy Fat Tuesday! Happy Paczki Day!

Now enough with these single-digit temperatures and bring on spring, already!

  • Like any good friend would do for a true pal in the job-hunting process, Anthony Miller went to bat for former Memphis teammate Tony Pollard:
  • Draft-eligible running back Tony Pollard wants to follow in Miller’s footsteps in going from Memphis standout to the NFL, writes Larry Mayer of the Bears’ official website. Pollard was an all-purpose machine for the Tigers, racking up more than 1,000 scrimmage yards on 117 touches (78 rushes, 39 catches) and scored nine total touchdowns (six receptions, three rushes). The X-factor with Pollard could be in his kick-return ability. Pollard picked up seven return touchdowns during his collegiate career, which is the most in FBS history. Knowing the Bears’ needs to upgrade at running back and in the return game, Pollard checks a bunch of boxes and looks like a perfect pick. And we already know he has one letter of recommendation coming his way from inside the walls at Halas Hall.

  • And let’s not forget about Darrell Henderson, whose second timed 40-yard dash was in the 4.3s. This guy can flat-out scoot:
  • Whether it’s Henderson, Pollard, or someone else, the Bears should prioritize impact playmakers on the offensive side of the ball (especially during the draft). Johnathan Wood of Da Bears Blog took a deeper dive into the numbers, which prove that the Bears need more explosive plays on offense. Defensive scores helped boost the Bears overall offensive output, but all that did was cover up some of the team’s offensive deficiencies. Because while it’s nice that the Bears weren’t sending offensive football back to the stone age in 2018 as they did in previous years, better isn’t good enough for a team squarely in its contention window.
  • Self-improvement always goes a long way toward reaching goals. It’s as true in football as it is in life. JJ Stankevitz of NBC Sports Chicago explores Allen Robinson as an in-house candidate to take another step forward in 2019. Robinson didn’t rack up the 1,000-yard season we hoped for when the Bears signed him last March, but he was a stabilizing force in the offense and a reliable pass-catcher for Mitch Trubisky to target in times of need. That 1,000-yard potential flashed during the playoff game, especially when things started to really click in the second half. The Trubisky-Robinson connection in the guts of the game stand out to me as something that can be a building block for that tandem moving forward.
  • Bradley Sowell dashing to the end zone on “Santa’s Sleigh” was one of my favorite moments of 2018:

  • Maybe the Bears need to get more offensive linemen involved as receivers to give the offense the boost it needs? Can’t hurt, could help.
  • I’m going to take Tarik Cohen a round too early, but he’s going to make it worth it:
  • Prince Amukamara a.k.a. Mr. Suavemente is heating it up while I type this under multiple layers of blankets:

  • Among today’s Deals of the Day at Amazon are baseball and softball gear. One of my summertime goals is to latch on to a friend’s softball league if it’s possible, so the timing of this couldn’t have been any better.
