Clutch Cutler, Admitting to Owning Embarrassing Jerseys, Respecting Legends, and Other Bullets

I’m glad Brett shared this because it’s been a while since I’ve seen a manager get big mad like this:

  • You rarely (if ever) see football head coaches get tossed. We’re so used to it in baseball and basketball, but I can’t remember a referee giving the heave-ho to a head coach. Not that I want it to happen, especially now that the Bears have a coach I think does a good job with his players and during in-game situations. But if Matt Patricia wants to go off and get run this year, I’ll be standing by waiting for it to happen.
  • The Bears have had some coaches over the years who I wish would have been thrown out of games because it probably would have upgraded the team’s coaching situation. But I digress.
  • More Tarik Cohen, please:
  • Cohen was given 170 touches last season, which was 30 more than what he was given as a rookie. With the increase in opportunities, Cohen rewarded the Bears to the tune of 1,169 yards from scrimmage and 6.9 yards per touch. It was a nice season, to be sure, but more touches should be in order for an absolute game-breaker like Cohen.
  • A worthwhile nugget regarding a recent position swap:
  • The Bears were on the short end of these games against the Packers for far too long, but the cat-and-mouse games between Brian Urlacher and Brett Favre were legendary:
  • This highlight package really is something else:
  • (Photo by Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images)

  • It felt like every Bears fan in my age group owned an Urlacher jersey growing up. But on the opposite end of the spectrum, there are a ton of us who owned some less-than-desirable jerseys. The folks at Windy City Gridiron chimed in with the most embarrassing Bears jersey to own.
  • Personally, I stay the heck away from anything No. 8 these days. I was a not-so-proud owner of an orange Cade McNown jersey, to the point where I stripped the name plate off the back because I was so upset with his play. And when Rex Grossman disappointed me, I swore to never buy a Bears quarterback jersey again. But when Mitch Trubisky came to town, I couldn’t help myself — probably because he was smart enough to not choose the No. 8 that was cursed by the quarterbacks who came before him.
  • Speaking of Bears quarterbacks, look where Jay Cutler lands on this list:
  • Sure, teams need to be down in the fourth for these comebacks to happen. But to make them happen takes some real gumption. Cutler engineered 16 fourth-quarter comebacks and 18 game-winning drives in the fourth quarter or overtime during his eight-year career with the Bears. In the eight years before that, it took seven different quarterbacks combined to string together 19 fourth-quarter comebacks and 20 game-winning drives.
  • Since lists have been on our minds in recent days, here is a lit of Bears quarterbacks from 2001-08 who had at least one fourth-quarter comeback and one game-winning drive, via Pro Football Reference:

  • Jim Miller (5 4QC, 5 GWD)
  • Rex Grossman (4 4QC, 6 GWD)
  • Brian Griese (3 4 QC, 3 GWD)
  • Kyle Orton (2 4QC, 3 GWD)
  • Kordell Stewart (2 4QC, 2 GWD)
  • Craig Krenzel (1 4QC, 1 GWD)
  • Poor Shane Matthews. He engineered two fourth-quarter comebacks in 2001, but no game-winning drives. Hence, his absence from the list above.
  • Also for the record: I am *NOT* embarrassed to have owned a Jay Cutler jersey. I’m just putting that out there for you fine folks on a Sunday.
  • Well wishes are in store for Bears linebacker/special teams stud/goal-line passing target Nick Kwiatkoski:

  • New names are joining familiar faces in the Jets’ hunt for a new GM:
  • A loaded set of Deals of the Day today at Amazon – speakers and books and beds and more.
  • Sad news to report from Green Bay:
  • Bart Starr telling the story of his legendary quarterback sneak in the Ice Bowl is worth sharing:
  • As is what is undoubtedly one of the most important plays in league history:
  • No matter how heated the Bears-Packers rivalry gets, there is always respect for the legends of the game. May Mr. Starr rest in peace.
  • Auburn radio voice Rod Bramblett passed away late Saturday night after injuries suffered in a car crash. You might best know Bramblett for this call of one of the greatest plays in college football history:
