Being a Chicago Bears running back comes with a certain amount of gravitas.
When you share a position with all-time greats such as Walter Payton, Gale Sayers, Red Grange, and Bronko Nagurski, you know there’s something special about that spot. Even the modern-day backs such as Matt Forte, Neal Anderson, and Thomas Jones played well to do their part to carry on the tradition of stellar backfield play. And soon enough, rookie David Montgomery will get his opportunity to take the torch and run with it.
Much like those who came before him, Montgomery is following in the footsteps of a popular rusher who set a high bar. With Jordan Howard being shipped off to Philadelphia, Montgomery is positioned to get a bulk of the carries after being drafted in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft. So will there be pressure on the Iowa State product to perform? Ha! Not likely.
“I don’t believe in pressure,” Montgomery said in the latest installment of the Bears’ “Meet The Rookies” video series. “Pressure only does two things to people — it busts pipes or it creates diamonds. I think I’m a diamond in the rough.”
Ooh wee! I felt those words in my soul.
Montgomery persevered through difficult circumstances growing up in Cincinnati, which might make the “pressure” one might feel on the football field feel like nothing. It’s only been a few months since the Bears drafted Montgomery, but the way he carries himself will is quickly making him someone fans will find it easy to come around and root for once football things start happening.
