Watch David Montgomery Run Through Monsters and Other Bullets

As a reminder to those of you attending Family Fest tonight at Soldier Field, Lollapalooza is happening at nearby Grant Park. So plan accordingly and give yourself extra time to arrive at your destination.

  • Run, Monty, run:
  • During live-tackling drills, rookie running back David Montgomery had one of those runs that had you in awe because you weren’t really sure how he stayed on his feet and continued to shed would-be tacklers. I like Mike Davis’ perspective on the run:
  • Bears Head Coach Matt Nagy has talked about how Montgomery has been hyped to get the pads on. Now I can see why.
  • @MBDChicago was absolutely nails with the images at Bears camp yesterday:
  • Mitch Trubisky has been a mixed bag at quarterback. His deep ball still needs work. Underthrows on deep balls have been my least favorite thing to see at camp. I’m not sure how Trubisky is going to get it right, other than allowing him to throw as many as possible in camp to work out the kinks, find a rhythm, develop a feel, and go from there. Trubisky has been sharp on slants and crossing patterns, which are key to running Matt Nagy’s offense. Success on short and intermediate routes should open up bigger windows for Trubisky to throw into over-the-top. Perhaps that will give him some more margin for error when throwing deep. It’s just that the under-thrown balls have made me feel uneasy to this point.
  • It was nice to see Adam Shaheen in pads and practicing on Friday, even if it was in a limited capacity. If Shaheen cannot be out there for live-tackling reps, he needs to be available for positional drills and what not. Every rep matters for the third-year tight end who has yet to live up to his potential as a second-round pick.
  • Given Shaheen’s lengthy injury history, Chris Emma (670 The Score) writes the Bears are going to proceed with caution when it comes to handling the back injury that has limited him in camp. In that vein, I do not believe he is at risk of being cut at the end of the preseason. Things could change between now and roster cut day, but Shaheen possesses too much upside to be discarded that quickly and I feel as if the Bears will give him every chance to make an impact before his rookie contract expires. They did the same with Kevin White, so there is precedent to consider here. Shaheen will get every opportunity to make an impact, but he needs to get healthy first.
  • It’s tricky:

  • Well, of course Eddie Jackson checks in among Pro Football Focus’ top-5 safeties ahead of the 2019 season. There would have been a riot had he ranked anywhere outside the top-5.
  • Chris Wesseling (NFL.com) lists Bears Defensive Coordinator Chuck Pagano as being on the hot spot this coming season. Pagano has big shoes to fill in taking over for Vic Fangio, but his biggest challenge will be to try to repeat last year’s excellence despite perceived slight downgrades in Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and Buster Skrine (who replace Adrian Amos and Bryce Callahan in the starting lineup). Before you allow the regression monster to push you toward the ledge of a tall building, don’t be afraid. Regression doesn’t mean the Bears are going to suddenly bad, it’s just that they might not be historically great next year. If the Bears are still a top-10 defense, they will be in good shape.
  • But to be honest, I haven’t loved what I’ve seen from Buster Skrine:
  • I don’t want to overreact to things that happen at training camp, but I feel as if rookie cornerback Duke Shelley could have a chance at cracking the starting lineup sooner, rather than later. If Shelley puts together a strong training camp and follows up with a good preseason, his time will soon come.
  • Picking a favorite receiver at Bears camp is a coin flip for me. Allen Robinson or Anthony Miller — who ya got?
  • A minor transaction:
  • Joe Walker played football at Delaware, which happens to be Coach Nagy’s alma mater. Here is an article from Delaware Online featuring Walker that discusses his move from throwing the pigskin to catching it.
  • The images from last year’s Hall of Fame weekend are still fresh in my head:
  • Duck is my new favorite Bear:
  • Monsters in the flesh:
  • Good luck to ex-Bears receiver Cam Meredith, who signed with the Patriots and was immediately placed on the PUP list. If Meredith starts the regular season on the PUP list, then the earliest he can join the team is Week 6. But that probably isn’t a concern right now. The Patriots’ main goal is to get him healthy and up-to-speed.
  • The Bulls front office couldn’t get out of its own way back in 2014 and it cost them a chance at a star:
  • 🎵 Benny come back… 🎵
