Mitch Trubisky Said the Quiet Part Loud and Other Bears Bullets

I’m back from my weekend hiatus in Carbondale and ready to gear up for tonight’s Bears-Chiefs game. And while I could use a quick re-charge of the batteries, knocking out Bullets should give me a bit of a jolt.

  • Patrick Mahomes is having the kind of success as a start that was expected from Mitch Trubisky when he was taken with the second overall pick. And while Trubisky has brief flashes of competent quarterbacking, they haven’t been enough to elevate his profile or lift his team when it has needed it the most. So … why is this the case? Just point to Trubisky’s honest assessment of the situation. “I would say I’m developing,” Trubisky said, via Chris Emma of 670 The Score. “Obviously, it doesn’t always show in the statistical categories, but I feel like I’ve learned a lot throughout the season. I’ve gotten a lot more comfortable in certain areas. I’ve definitely grown as a leader, being able to speak up, getting closer with coach and being on the same page, communicating throughout the week and being more involved in the game plan and checks throughout the game. … I’ve grown in ways that don’t necessarily show up on paper. Still got a long ways to go.”
  • Three years in and still developing? I would say that is accurate. The Trubisky experience is a roller-coaster ride of “hey, this guy has skills” when the ride goes up, and “what the heck is happening?” on the steep drops. It is the inconsistency in his game that hasn’t been smoothed out over three years that makes it difficult to even evaluate what he is in the present tense and what he could be long term.
  • With that being said, here is what Head Coach Matt Nagy wants to see from his quarterback in the season’s final two games:
  • It is as simple as this: Even though the Bears have been eliminated from postseason contention, there are still things to work on that could help the team avoid a similar fate in 2020. And frankly, it begins and ends with the quarterback position. It is the most important spot on the field. If the Bears don’t max out there, they will be stuck spinning their wheels for quite a while, writes Danny Heifetz of The Ringer. Sure, the offensive line has been problematic, his receivers have had issues with drops, and the play-calling has been inconsistent. But even when things are going well, Heifetz points out Trubisky’s inability to constantly see open receivers, trust the pocket when it is clean, or keep his eyes up when facing a pass-rush. And when asked to rise above the noise, Trubisky hasn’t been able to consistently do it. The splash plays are nice and they allow you to dream on a player whose athleticism and raw talent should produce a better, more productive player. But it is the inconsistency in his game that is troublesome now that we are three years into his career.
  • OOF. SI.com’s Gary Gramling delivers a gut-punch of a line in his latest: “With their first head-to-head meeting Sunday night, we will get to settle the age-old debate of who is the better third-year quarterback: Patrick Mahomes or Mitchell Trubisky. And later this week, we will also get to settle the age-old debate of which is the taster Christmas treat: peppermint bark or shards of broken glass fished out of the dumpster behind Blimpie’s.”
  • If you were to ask NFL.com’s Michael Fabiano how to approach the Mahomes-Trubisky matchup on Sunday, he would suggest fading Trubisky. In fact, the Bears’ starting quarterback lands on his list of signal callers to sit in Week 16 — at least from a fantasy perspective. Fabiano notes that no defense in the NFL has allowed fewer touchdown passes or fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks over the last four weeks. With that in mind, I hope you’re starting someone who can win you a championship.
  • Then again, Jameis Winston (1 touchdown, 4 interceptions) was on Fabiano’s “start ’em” list. You can’t win ’em all!
  • Parker Hurley of Fansided’s Bear Goggles On highlighted five throws that were not made by Mitch Trubisky in Week 16. I’m not sharing to pick on Trubisky, but instead, I am doing so to underline the things he needs to improve upon over the next final two games of the season.
  • If Trubisky ever feels down about things, he should remember that he had believers once upon a time:
  • There are many last-minute deals at Amazon, and I might find myself doing some shopping today because I don’t have much of an interest in stepping out and fighting crowds on a Sunday when football is happening. #ad
