DeFilippo’s Skills and Impact, Super Bowl 55 Odds, Cohen’s Hat Game, and Other Bears Bullets

This is the most mind-bending sandwich I have ever seen:

  • In case you missed it, the Chicago Bears’ coaching staff is set to undergo some pretty significant changes heading into next season. And the headliner might not be the addition of a new offensive coordinator, because landing John DeFilippo as the QBs Coach is a pretty impressive get. And that DeFilippo had other offers (per NFL insider Adam Caplan) suggests Chicago is still a decent landing spot for offensive coaches. I wasn’t sure that was going to be the case after three offensive coaches were dismissed after their second season, but some guys still have faith in the power structure as currently constructed.
  • It is wild to think folks are more excited about a position coach than the offensive coordinator, who ranks second in command behind the play-calling head coach when it comes to the offensive power structure. But here we are nodding in understanding about the possible impact DeFilippo could have as a coach coming into work with Mitch Trubisky and two quarterbacks to be named later.
  • Knowing what we know about Trubisky and his fundamentals, I found myself feeling the need to re-surface this tweet from 670 The Score’s Chris Emma from January 2018:
  • Carson Wentz played his best ball when DeFilippo was in his ear every day as his position coach. And while I won’t predict 2017 Carson Wentz numbers for Trubisky in 2020, it is worth noting that Wentz’s production and efficiency hasn’t been the same since DeFilippo skipped town. Evidently, Trubisky needs a little more hands on pushing from his position coach, and perhaps DeFilippo brings exactly that to the table (that’s not to say whatever Dave Ragone was doing wasn’t working, but sometimes you need a new voice and new direction to ultimately get where you want to go). And it’s not like Ragone is going anywhere, he’ll be the Passing Game Coordinator.
  • The best advice I’ve ever given anyone who didn’t get the job they desired was to not burn any bridges just because you didn’t get the gig. You never know when someone will come back to you with something else you might like. That thought crossed my mind when I saw the DeFilippo news, and remembered this post we did about his thoughts regarding the Bears, Nagy, and Trubisky from after he didn’t get the head-coaching position he applied for in 2018. Clearly, the Bears liked what they heard from him in the interview process.
  • BONUS: It sounds like DeFilippo knows the value of the tight end in this offense. Just listen to him talk about the Jaguars’ draft pick from last spring:
  • Also, because his nickname is Coach Flip, I can’t help but get the Lil’ Flip song “Game Over” unstuck from my head.
  • I’d rather be preparing for the NFC Championship Game, but bringing on a new offensive coordinator, offensive line coach, and quarterbacks coach is a decent start to the offseason.
  • Alright, who’s ready for Super Bowl 55 odds?
  • The Bears provide a tremendous value at 30/1. I’m just saying.
  • This is an encouraging development:

  • Tarik Cohen has played the role of running back, return specialist, slot receiver, and quarterback in Chicago. Now, he can add hat guy to his résumé:

  • This was a pretty cool moment from yesterday:
  • I hope Larry Fitzgerald plays forever:
  • One of the better offensive tackle prospects has declared for the NFL Draft:
  • The Bulls won a game last night …
  • … but lost a key developmental piece in the process:
