Mitchell Trubisky is a free agent.
As of today, his representation can talk to the league’s other 31 teams in search of a fit for 2021. And on Wednesday, he is eligible to sign with a team after the new league year begins at 3 p.m. CT. So because time is a flat circle, one of those teams could be one who was interested in Trubisky leading up to the 2017 Draft.
NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo reports the San Francisco 49ers are interested in Trubisky.
The main reason we’re on an obsessive quarterback watch entering the 2021 league year is because the Bears traded up to take Trubisky with the second overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, only to watch him fall well short of the lofty expectations that come with being that pick. Four years later, Trubisky is looking for a fresh start, a clean slate, and some guidance to reach that untapped potential. Perhaps it can happen in San Francisco, with a team that was connected to him throughout the mock draft season.
Head Coach Kyle Shanahan is a quarterback guru whose offense seems to fit Trubisky’s skill set. I mean, if CJ Beathard can take down a Cardinals team vying for a playoff spot, then it’s easy to dream on what someone with a little more athletic upside can do. However, we’re not quite there yet. And Trubisky figures to have other suitors who might intrigue him. Perhaps another camp challenge in Washington provides a clearer path to a starting role?
In any case, we’ll continue to watch with great interest what happens with Trubisky. Because even if he isn’t back with the Bears, his next deal could impact what the team gets on the compensatory draft pick market. So, in other words, here’s hoping Trubisky gets a healthy chunk of change elsewhere. It’ll be for the betterment of the team who invested so much in him in the first place.
