From humble beginnings in Alabama, to overcoming the highs and lows of a college career that included a stop at USC and a transfer to Tennessee, and ultimately getting the call to The Show from the Bears on NFL Draft weekend, Velus Jones Jr.’s journey is one of perseverance.
And that common thread is prevalent throughout the first installment of the 2022 edition of the Chicago Bears’ annual Meet the Rookies web series:
This quote from Jones reflecting on his journey really hit home with me:
“A lot of people doubted me, doubted my journey, didn’t believe, but I never stopped believing in myself. Even when I was younger, I knew I was always going to be here. I didn’t know how it was going to happen, but that’s the beautiful part. Faith is something you can’t see. Something you can’t hear. It’s just something you have to believe in. I’ve had tunnel vision the whole time, and I’m not going to stop here.”
Perseverance and betting on one’s self are anecdotes in so many stories of players who make it to the NFL, Jones, his family, and close friends who appear in this episode of Meet the Rookies share some unique perspective that give good background which helps explain how he gets to this point in the first place. So I would encourage you to give it a watch. Jones is one of the many Bears newbies we’re looking forward to seeing in action this year — and in seasons to come. Here’s to him adding some more successful chapters in his football life while as a member of the Bears.
