Bears Are Signing OL Zachary Thomas to the Practice Squad

The last few days have been a roller coaster for rookie offensive lineman Zachary Thomas.

At first, Thomas made the initial Chicago Bears 53-player roster. And there must’ve been plenty of rejoicing from the sixth-rounder from San Diego State. But a day later when the Bears made six waiver claims, someone (well, multiple someones) had to go. And Thomas was one of the players Chicago moved out to move in some new guys.

However, all is well that ends well this week as Thomas returns to the Bears’ practice squad:

Not to be confused with the five-time first-team All-Pro who shares the same name, the Bears’ Zachary Thomas was a first-team All-Mountain West offensive lineman in 2021. He has collegiate experience at both tackle spots, as well as right guard, which led him to play inside during training camp and in the Bears’ preseason games. There was an outside shot of him earning a starting gig, but that didn’t come to fruition. Instead, Thomas will have to climb his way up the depth chart — beginning with doing some time on the practice squad to start the year.

Of course, someone had to get let go in order to make room for him on the unit. And it was defensive lineman Micah Dew-Treadway, another rookie, moving off the practice squad. As things stand right now, Trevon Coley and Sam Kamara remain as the only defensive linemen on the practice squad. But with as much movement as we’ve already seen with the bottom third of this roster, I wouldn’t get to attached to any of these players. This churn doesn’t seem to be stopping any time soon.
