One of my favorite things about the NFL is that every year features players who become the main character in an out-of-nowhere comeback story.
And one of those players this year will be Mitchell Trubisky, who officially starts the 2022 season as the Pittsburgh Steelers’ top quarterback:
Even though he was a Pro Bowl alternate in 2018 and winner of the 2021 NVP award for his efforts in the Bears’ playoff loss to the Saints in January 2021, Trubisky, a first-round pick by the Bears in 2017, didn’t end his time in Chicago on great terms. But the Bills brought him in to re-vitalize his career. It seems to have worked out well for him, with Pittsburgh being quick to sign Trubisky in free agency back in March. And for what it’s worth, Trubisky seems to have learned some lessons in his gap year in Buffalo that bridged the gap between his last season in Chicago and first in Pittsburgh. With a clean slate in front of him, Trubisky will start writing a new chapter on his career beginning this week. And I’m not afraid to admit I’m rooting for him to succeed.
Just because Trubisky didn’t succeed in Chicago doesn’t mean it can’t work out for him somewhere else. And if it does, it will make for a remarkable story of perseverance for a player who was sooo needing a change of scenery by the time the 2020 season finished.
How long Trubisky lasts as QB1 in Pittsburgh is uncertain. The Steelers used their first-round pick on quarterback Kenny Pickett, so Trubisky could face a fate similar to the one Mike Glennon did when he was Trubisky’s placeholder in 2017. Nevertheless, Trubisky’s journey is worth watching from afar. I mean, who doesn’t love a good bounce back story?
