There are few plays in the history of sports that are as iconic as The Immaculate Reception.
Franco Harris, the Hall of Fame Pittsburgh Steelers running back who was author of that epic moment, died at age 72. The Associated Press was first with the reporting.
Let’s take a moment to re-live one of the biggest plays in NFL history, shall we?
Harris was one of the most exemplary players in NFL history for one of the most recognizable franchise in the league. He ran for 12,120 yards, scored 100 total touchdowns, won four Super Bowl rings, and was part of one of the biggest dynasties in league history. Harris, a nine-time Pro Bowler during his 13-year career, was as good as they get during his time.
In Steelers country, what might sting most about the timing of Harris’ death is that it comes just two days before the 50th anniversary of The Immaculate Reception. And just days before his jersey retirement ceremony in Pittsburgh. Oof. My heart hurts for Steelers fans and the Harris family for not getting to have that one last moment in the spotlight. My condolences to Harris’ family, friends, and fans during these tough times.
