Matt Eberflus added another intriguing offensive-leaning mind to his coaching staff on Tuesday. Former Titans TE Coach Luke Steckel is the Bears’ new Assistant Offensive Line Coach.
Chicago’s football team made it officially official today:
The more, the merrier.
Steckel is an interesting hire on multiple levels. For one, he’s made his way around the league, with 14 years of NFL coaching experience, including stints in Cleveland (2009-12) and Tennessee (2013-22). And in different capacities, too. Steckel has held a bunch of titles over the years, which speaks to his staying power (and ability to do different jobs):
Titles and experience can certainly play a role when it comes to résumé building. So perhaps it should come as no surprise that Steckel garnered interest from the Los Angeles Chargers for their offensive coordinator vacancy last month:
Sure, the position ultimately went to Kellen Moore after the Cowboys unceremoniously dumped him. Nevertheless, I am encouraged that the Bears’ newest assistant was getting a look from a team that had a premier offensive assistant gig open for the taking.
And I see it as an added bonus that NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero describes Steckel as “highly intelligent and widely respected by players and peers” in the tweet above. Because while the Bears have gobs of money to spend in free agency, the importance of having coaches who possess the ability to connect and get respect cannot be overstated. Yes, even if it is an assistant position coach. Every bit helps, after all.
