Report: The Bears Want David Montgomery Back, But He “Appears Poised to Hit Free Agency”

Chicago Bears

Saquon Barkley, Tony Pollard, and Josh Jacobs getting the Franchise Tag treatment out David Montgomery at the top of the list of available free agent running backs.

And even though there has been mutual interest in running it back with the Chicago Bears in 2023, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler sees Montgomery as being on the cusp of testing the market where he can talk shop with the NFL’s other 31 teams:

Chicago would like to re-sign running back David Montgomery, though as of now he appears poised to hit free agency.

The window for teams to negotiate with their own free agents ends on Monday morning. And when it comes to the Bears, Montgomery’s situation is one we are watching with great interest. Montgomery checks some important boxes for the Bears. His hard-nosed running style and tackle-breaking skills are still going strong. And we know he fits as a tag team partner with Khalil Herbert. Additionally, his leadership in the locker room could be seen as valuable. Particularly for a Bears team whose coach and general manager talk about culture as much as they do. And yet, there has been no public traction in terms of hashing out an extension. What gives?

Maybe the Bears plan on letting Monty feel out his market before trying to iron out a deal. After all, Fowler does say the Bears would like to re-sign Montgomery. However, time is running out for Chicago to do so without dealing with other interested teams. The open negotiation period begins at 11 AM CT on Monday. Brace yourselves. Changes are coming throughout the league.
