No, linebacker wasn’t a position I thought the Bears would draft before other positions.
However, we’re in Round 5 on Day 3. So I should know better and I should’ve been preparing myself for something unexpected.
Something such as the Chicago Bears drafting Oregon linebacker Noah Sewell:
Upcoming Bears-Lions games are going to be a family affair.
Maybe they’ll turn into some sort of tag team match.
In one corner, we can have the St. Brown Bros — Equanimeous and Amon-Ra. And in the other, we can have the Sewells — Penei and Noah. Before you discard this from the suggestion box, just think of the ratings draw. No, seriously. Bad Thursday Night Football games between teams with quarterbacks who probably will be seeking backup jobs at season’s end can draw millions of viewers. So why can’t my idea? At least get the concept in front of FOX’s producers. They’ve given worse show ideas more runway. But I digress.
NFL Draft analyst Lance Zierlein’s description of what Sewell (the linebacker) brings to the table has me looking forward to unearthing more about the newest Bear:
Inside ‘backer possessing throwback demeanor as a physical but limited prospect. Sewell has good power to take on blocks and muddy the middle, but his lack of pursuit speed and change-of-direction quickness prevent him from consistently making the stop. He needs to become more anticipatory and read play development more effectively, as he’s missing the tools necessary to overcome missteps.
Again, linebacker wasn’t a high-level need. But I’m all for adding some more newbies to the bench.
