The first injury report of the week is OUT. And when it comes to the Chicago Bears, all eyes were on Kyler Gordon’s practice status. As expected, the news wasn’t any good. Gordon was a DNP because of a hand injury. Not practicing on Wednesday puts Gordon’s playing status against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 2 in doubt.
Unfortunately, Gordon wasn’t the only notable Bears defensive back popping up on the injury report. Here is Wednesday’s initial release of the injury report in its entirety:
Two Cornerbacks Are on the Bears Injury Report
Fellow cornerback Josh Blackwell shows up on Wednesday’s injury report as a limited participant because of a hamstring injury. An injury to a reserve cornerback wouldn’t normally be a cause for concern. However, that is not the case this week. Not when a starter like Gordon is totally unavailable because of their own injury. Plus, Blackwell was likely next up on the depth chart in the nickel to play in Gordon’s place. In other words, the Bears could be without both of their top options for slot cornerbacks. GULP!
MORE: Kyler Gordon and Bracing for the Worst
We were bracing for the worst this morning when it came to the Kyler Gordon news. And now, we’re only beginning to realize that the worst-case scenario could be realistic. There was a small part of me that was hoping Bears Head Coach Matt Eberflus playing coy was a sign that the injury wasn’t as bad as primarily feared. But I knew better than to think that because Eberflus’s side-stepping direct questioning was a tell in its own right. Ugh. What a start to the year we’re experiencing with these Bears.
We’ll continue to monitor Gordon’s injury status as the week goes on. Hopefully, Gordon (and Blackwell) will receive good news sooner rather than later.
