Waldron Wins, Keenan Lands, Pickett’s Plunge and How it Relates to Fields’ Fate, and Other Bears Bullets

bears offensive coordinator Shane Waldron

Happy St. Patrick’s Day Weekend, Bears fans. Please enjoy responsibly.

This has been an obtuse morning for me, so I’m going to try and pound through Bullets while I can.

  • Your first look at Keenan Allen as a member of the Chicago Bears:
  • INSIDE THE KEENAN ALLEN TRADE: Team Fit, Career Stats, Highlights, More

  • Allen spoke to the Chicago media on Saturday morning. I’ll get to some highlights in a later post. But before I do that, I want to reiterate how happy I am that he is here. The DJ Moore-Keenan Allen tandem is the best receiver duo the Bears have rostered since Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery were together. It might not matter who the QB is if these two guys are out in formation. Good luck, opposing DBs.
  • A fun thing to think about RE: the Keenan Allen Trade — the veteran leadership inside the receivers room is going to be top-notch with him and DJ Moore working together. To be clear, I don’t thing Moore and Allen are going to do a ton of hands-on teaching. However, we did see that with Yannick Ngakoue working with Gervon Dexter Sr. after practice at trying camp last year. But I’m thinking more along the lines of leadership-by-example stuff that young guys can follow.
  • Who is having a better offseason than Shane Waldron? He comes to Chicago and is greeted with an upgrade in the backfield (D’Andre Swift), a new starting center (Coleman Shelton) and two depth offensive linemen who can cover backup roles for all 5 spots between the two of them, another tight end (Gerald Everett) to properly deploy 12 personnel packages, and a six-time Pro Bowl wideout (Allen) to tie it all together. What else could a guy want?
  • This is a mind-bending tweet:
  • This feels like a good time to re-share Matt’s latest mock draft, which has four quarterbacks going off the board in the first five picks.
  • The offseason influx of new offensive talent will help the Bears, no matter who plays quarterback. (Sun-Times)
  • Jimmy Garoppolo is taking the Vegas to LA flight and signing with the Los Angeles Rams, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Between teams turning to free agency to sign backups and the Sam Howell trade to the Seahawks (and Kenny Pickett trade to the Eagles) trades, I think we’re starting to see a Justin Fields trade market start to take place.
  • If that is how the cookie crumbles, then it will irk me to no end that Justin Fields and Kenny Pickett were seen on the same level:
  • A brief aside: One of my closest friends is a Steelers fan who lives out of state. If you’re reading this, hi. Anyway, she and I had a strongly worded conversation in which she expressed how she was perplexed about why more people weren’t making a big deal out of Kenny Pickett being flippant about not learning anything while being on the shelf with an injury and watching from the sidelines. Or that he wasn’t dressing as QB3 in some act of defiance. I think she makes a valid point. Could you imagine any other QB doing that and getting away with it?
  • Ultimately, I think we realize why that was treated the way it was — so Pittsburgh could ultimately flip a player it had no future with and get useful draft capital in return. Not that we needed a trade to tell us how the Steelers felt about Kenny Pickett. Willingly starting Mason Rudolph in a playoff game was enough of an indication for me.
  • Five o’clock on a Friday news dump: The Bears announced the release of offensive lineman Roy Mbaeteka at 4:56 p.m. on Friday. If you’ll recall, Mbaeteka was added to Chicago’s practice squad last May through the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program. By bringing Mbaeteka onto the Bears roster in that way, the team was allowed to have an extra practice squad spot. What a nifty way to bend the league’s rules in your favor.
  • This is the time of year when I wonder if Jacob is trying to pull a fast one on me with the prospect names he pulls:
  • The Bears might need to draft McCallan Castles based on his name alone.
  • Sammy Sosa returned to Chicago for the first time in 17 years — and was immediately asked about steroids.
  • Charles Barkley LOVES making fun of the Chicago Bulls. (BN Bulls)
  • It is a newsy time for the Chicago Blackhawks. They lost to the Los Angeles Kings last night and are recalling Lukas Reichel from the minors. But they also had a cool thing last night with Landon Slaggert making his debut:
