Caleb Williams didn’t throw at the NFL Scouting Combine in March, so we didn’t get to see the velocity on his pass registered on a radar gun. But from what we’ve seen on tape and at his Pro Day at USC, it looks like the football gets out of his hand in a hurry.
But if you were still curious about Williams’ ball’s zip, this story from his old offensive coordinator in high school should help explain.
Caleb Williams has had a rocket arm since his high school days
In a story from ESPN’s Courtney Cronin, Danny Schaechter — who was the offensive coordinator at Gonzaga High School while Williams was there — recalls one painful training camp practice. Schaechter says that about halfway through practice, he noticed that his left hand was in pain and then observed blood dripping from his ring finger.
“I’m like, ‘What the heck did I do?’ And then I realized, ‘Oh crap—my wedding ring is split in half,'” Schaechter said.
Williams had thrown the football so hard to Schaechter at one point that he split his wedding ring and cut his finger.
“Because of Caleb, I take my wedding ring off anytime I’m going to go do some football stuff,” Schaechter said. “I don’t want anybody to break my wedding ring, but he was the only one who actually did it.”
Cronin talked to a handful of people from Williams’ present and past to put together a very cool compilation of stories that help us learn more about the new Chicago Bears quarterback from the people who know him best. If you haven’t yet, check this one out at some point today.
