Only 93 days until the Chicago Bears play in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game.
You probably weren’t keeping a countdown in your head, but now you know.
I know that I’ve said I am OUT on the Bears orange jerseys. But Caleb Williams changing his Twitter profile pic to a fire edit of him in an orange jersey top has me reconsidering things. I’m no fashionista, but I clean up nicely for date night. With that being said, maybe the orange tops would look cool without the orange helmet. Perhaps pairing the orange tops with navy helmets and pants would work better? Someone get the wardrobe department on the case!
Everyone on the Bears needs to have this mindset moving forward:
From the office of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker: The Chicago Bears stadium proposal is a “non-starter” — which serves as a reminder that we’ve got such a long way to go in this process. Here’s hoping you have your comfy pants on if you’re going to ride this out with the rest of us.
Even when it felt like the Bears moving the burbs was a foregone conclusion, there was always going to be an aspect that included a request for public money and taxpayer dollars out in Arlington Heights. Heck, the inability to meet in the middle on that front is one of the things that has helped spur the team’s pivot to a lakefront stadium project. Moving forward, I can’t shake the feeling that this is going to be a full-on spectacle between the Bears, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson.
This truly has the potential to be an all-time political and sports mashup story in the storied history of this city, region, and state. It has all sorts of tentacles. And as someone who has studied the Chicago and Illinois political scene since I was a high schooler, what I learned in the past suggests that the future is going to be a doozy.
I’ll add this before sliding onto other Bears Bullets topics: There is a part of me that still thinks that Arlington Heights is the team’s ultimate destination. Bears President Kevin Warren has not fully shut the door on that front, noting that the team still owns that Arlington Park property. So while I believe Warren is sincere in wanting a downtown stadium along the lake, there figure to be fewer political hurdles to clear in suburban Arlington Heights than there are in Chicago. Stay tuned.
Bears linebacker Tremaine Edmunds is celebrating a birthday today. To celebrate, let’s enjoy this episode of Mic’d Up starring the man in the middle:
All things considered, Tremaine Edmunds had a disappointing season in 2023. But it wasn’t a total loss. Edmunds came away with 4 interceptions and had his first career pick-six. The Bears are hoping for more after paying at the top of the market last offseason. But perhaps the best is yet to come for a player who has two Pro Bowl nods under his belt. Maybe getting the transitional year as a free agent out of the way will lead to a better 2024.
As soon as the Bears made the Tory Taylor draft pick officially official, it spelled the end of the Trenton Gill era. Gill was placed on waivers Wednesday, marking the end of his time with Chicago’s football team.
Bears Head Coach Matt Eberflus on new punter (via 670 The Score): “Tory is a weapon for the whole team.”
When your coach is talking about your placement like that, you know time is up. Even with that being said, I wish Trenton Gill the best of luck in the future. For what it’s worth, ex-Bears punters such as Tress Way and Pat O’Donnell found jobs after parting ways with Chicago. So there is some hope for Gill.
Last night’s Cubs-Mets game had a wild finish that left many (mostly Mets fans, tbh) puzzled. Thankfully, Brett breaks it down and gives you everything you need to read about the situation here:
Is Chicago Bulls General Manager Marc Eversley a name to watch for the Detroit Pistons front office opening? (BN Bulls)
Here is a goal from Chicago Blackhawks prospect Ethan Del Mastro:
Luis C. Medina, who you can find on Twitter at lcm1986, has been covering the Chicago Bears at Bleacher Nation since 2017. Since then, he has written about 3 head coaches, 5 play-callers, and 11 starting quarterbacks. Previously, Luis wrote about the Cubs and MLB at BN (2015-16) and worked in the Chicago Tribune sports department (2011-16). He also co-hosted a Cubs postgame show, Outside the Ivy, in 2019.
