Building For Caleb, Shedeur Sanders Noise, Teddy Gives Back, and Other Bears Bullets

Bears WR DJ Moore

If you’re reading this, I never circled back to create a more compelling opening for Bears Bullets.

  • It seems like it is time to pump the brakes on a potential NFL schedule release dropping this week. Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio writes that no one knows when the 2024 NFL schedule drop is coming down. Florio ventures to guess that the league’s attempts to schedule football games on Christmas (which falls on a Wednesday this year) is throwing a wrench in their plans. I suppose if anyone is going to have a good feel for this, it would be Florio — who is a part of NBC’s NFL Sunday Night Football programming. You’d like to think that someone in his position would know what they are talking about on this front.
  • No matter how the schedule looks in its final form, we already know who the Chicago Bears opponents will be in 2024.
  • Maybe the NFL is trying to figure out how to squeeze the Bears into every primetime window. Perhaps the league’s broadcast partners are duking it out to be the network that gets Caleb Williams’ NFL debut. I wouldn’t blame them if that was the case.
  • Now, this is what I call team-building:
  • Knowing your quarterback’s strengths and piecing together a roster to help amplify those strengths is Team Building 101. Of course, getting all of those pieces in place is easier said than done. But that just means you have to try harder.
  • Over at Da Bears Blog, Johnathan Wood takes a closer look at down and distance trends for new Bears Offensive Coordinator Shane Waldron. I love J-Wood’s offseason dives into the metrics, so I’ll be circling back to this later.
  • Cincinnati Bengals executive Trey Brown turned down an opportunity to interview for what NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero describes as the “de facto GM position” for the New England Patriots. I would wonder if Bears Assistant GM Ian Cunningham would be a candidate for that position. However, I can’t see him leaving for a gig where he wouldn’t get full autonomy.
  • Just some guys on the Chicago Bears being dudes on a golf course:
  • Award season: The Bears accepted the Corporate Community BUILDer award, which is handed out to an organization’s work in supporting the youth in their quest to be great. We applaud community work around here, folks.
  • In yesterday’s set of Bears Bullets, we found ourselves discussing Green Bay Packers rookie offensive lineman Jordan Morgan expressing confidence in his ability to play left tackle despite measurables that NFL talent evaluators would see as prohibiting him from doing so at a high level. On day later, GB OC Adam Stenavich (via the team’s website) wouldn’t even commit to Morgan’s position. Considering that the Packers are just starting the rookie minicamp phase, maybe it is the smart thing to not put a label on a player who could start at a number of different positions. It’s only May, for crying out loud. There is so much time to sort through the different offensive line lineup possibilities.
  • Keeping an eye on Aaron Rodgers’ successor isn’t a priority for us these days. But this quote from New York Jets rookie quarterback Jordan Travis (h/t NY Post) caught my eyes. “I do think about that a lot,” Travis said of being Rodgers’ heir apparent in New York. “but right now I’m just focused on where my feet are — getting healthy, getting everybody around me better, being a great teammate.”
  • Travis, a fifth-round pick out of Florida State, was the ACC’s Player of the Year in 2023 and earned first-team All-ACC honors in a 2023 season in which he finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting. Travis suffered a serious leg injury last November, which helped tank his draft stock. But maybe sitting behind Rodgers for a few years will allow him to fully recover and learn while not being thrust into a bad situation.
  • A verified Twitter user known for engagement-bait got absolutely roasted for saying the conference that produced Patrick Mahomes had never seen a quarterback like Shedeur Sanders. I’m starting to feel like aptitude tests should be taken as part of the process of getting a verified checkmark. It could help stop the spread of the dumbest takes you’ll ever see.
  • Speaking of Shedeur Sanders, one anonymous NFL talent evaluator told The Washington Post’s Jason La Canfora that the Colorado QB would’ve been QB1 in this class — even ahead of Caleb Williams. There was a time (and it wasn’t all that long ago) where anonymity was granted because it was supposed to be for the protection of information for stories that would never get out. Now, anonymity is being used for executives wanting to troll post online.
  • I love seeing ex-NFL players give back to their community. Going back to be the head coach at your high school alma mater is a wonderful thing:

  • Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards gave his thoughts on Michael Jordan comparisons, then dropped the defending NBA champion Denver Nuggets into a 2-0 deficit. I don’t think the Jordan comps are going to stop anytime soon if he keeps this going. (BN Bulls)
  • Over in the BN Cubs department, Michael offers up a good (under-the-radar) trade target for a Chicago Cubs bullpen that needs all the help it can get.
