Significant Injury News, College Prospects Hit the Ice, Talking to Thompson, a Big Deal in St. Louis, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

Chicago Blackhawks

The Blackhawks’ prospects will hit the ice for practice ahead of the Tom Kurvers Prospect Showcase tomorrow. Which means we’re one day away from being able to head to the rink and watch some actual hockey. We can’t wait. But a couple Blackhawks are going to have the start of their seasons delayed…

  • Tuesday morning brought news of two injuries for the Blackhawks, one of which will hit the blue line hard to start the regular season. How long will the Hawks be without Jake McCabe? And who will get his 20 minutes per game to start the year?
  • It looks like Ethan Del Mastro will be on the blue line this week for the prospect games. He showed well after being a late add to Canada’s roster at the World Juniors so this is exciting news.
  • Monday brought the official beginning of the college hockey season. It was glorious seeing the tweets about teams hitting the ice all over the country, even if a few (like this one from Boston University) were a little cheeky.
  • These sweaters are pretty. Drew Commesso and Ryan Greene are going to look good this season at BU.
  • No jersey ads you say? We hear you, BU… we hear you loud and clear.
  • The University of Denver was also on the ice. They’re hoping to defend their national championship this year. The year after the last time DU won a ‘chip one of their key freshman additions was Ian Mitchell. This year they’re adding another Blackhawks’ prospect, Aidan Thompson.
  • Speaking of Thompson, I talked to him on Monday about his summer — a summer that included getting drafted (finally), having a great development camp in Chicago and a strong camp with USA Hockey before heading to Denver for his first college season. Hopefully he was cashing frequent flyer miles on all those flights!
  • Frank Nazar made a couple celebrity guest appearances on the University of Michigan’s men’s hockey IG story on Monday. We can’t wait to see that talented team on the ice this season!
  • The Blues have reportedly locked up one of their key young players with a long-term deal. Jordan Kyrou, 24, had 75 points last season and, with Robert Thomas, appears to be a cornerstone of the next decade in St. Louis. Having those two signed is enormous for the Blues.
  • Finally, what exactly happens to the Bears when Virginia McCaskey passes away? Well… it’s complicated. And a story on Tuesday opened some eyes about how it might work (or not work).
