Holy Jumpin’ the Florida Panthers Just Upset the Boston Bruins!

Chicago Blackhawks, NHL

The 2022-23 Boston Bruins were the greatest regular season team in the history of the NHL. That’s a fact. They were absolutely a wagon the entire season. And the assumption was that they would roll a Florida Panthers team that had underwhelmed most of the year.

The Panthers snuck into the playoffs late and had to face the Bruins in the first round. But they didn’t lack for swagger, led by Matthew Tkachuck.

Sunday night’s Game 7 needed overtime to be decided. The officiating was… questionable… after the Panthers took a 2-0 lead early in the game, and the Bruins came all the way back to take a 3-2 lead in the third period. But Brandon Montour — who had himself a fantastic series — scored his second goal of the night with 59 seconds left in regulation to force OT.

And in overtime, the game ended on a snipe from Carter Verhaeghe.

The Bruins were obviously stunned — and they should be. They had took a commanding lead in the series without Patrice Bergeron playing in the first four games of the series. But the Panthers never quit, and were able to come all the way back to steal the series.

The Panthers will now face the Toronto Maple Leafs in the second round. If the Panthers can win that series, the Blackhawks’ pick from the Tampa Bay Lightning will become the 19th overall pick in the first round of the 2023 NHL Draft. So… Go Panthers!
