According to a number of reports on Tuesday morning, former Blackhawks star forward Patrick Kane will sign a one-year deal with the Detroit Red Wings.
Elliotte Friedman was first with the Wings signing Kane and David Pagnotta was first with it being a one-year deal. The deal reportedly has a $2.75 million cap number, meaning Kane will make a little more than $2 million this season.
Detroit is currently third in the Atlantic Division with 25 points in the standings and have won their last three games. Kane will be back with his former linemate in Chicago, Alex DeBrincat, but his next significant negotiation will be getting No. 88 away from Daniel Sprong.
It’s unlikely that Kane would immediately jump into the Red Wings’ lineup, but it is at least noteworthy that the Blackhawks play in Detroit on Thursday evening this week. Detroit is in New York to face Kane’s other former team, the Rangers, on Wednesday night.
Detroit? REALLY?
I’ve already seen the “He pulled a Chelios!” comments on Twitter. Let’s hit the pause button on that for a moment. The significant difference here is Chris Chelios told radio listeners, hosts, producers, etc. that he would never accept a trade to Detroit and then did. Kane is an unrestricted free agent who was told by the Blackhawks that his tenure here had run its course. Totally different circumstances.
It will, however, be incredibly weird seeing Kane in a Red Wings sweater. And…
