Patrick Williams was DeMar DeRozan’s No. 1 target last summer.
DeRozan dragged the youngster out to Los Angeles to participate in his brutal offseason workout regimen. Williams later went out to detail what that week under DeRozan’s wing looked like. He mentioned a 3:30 a.m. wake-up call, as well as multiple workouts throughout the day. Now, it sounds like he’ll be participating in that grueling process again … along with anyone else who hasn’t achieved veteran status.
When asked at the start of his end-of-season press conference who would join DeRozan in LA in the coming month, he kept it simple: “Anybody under 24. Mandatory.”
I guess that means Williams, Dalen Terry, Coby White, and Ayo Dosunmu better get those tickets booked. Two-way talents like Carlik Jones and Justin Lewis should probably also follow suit.
The vibes may not be as immaculate as they were last summer, particularly with guys like White and Dosunmu hitting free agency (DeRozan’s future is also in question a little with an extension looming). But I’m sure DeRozan is willing to extend a helping hand regardless of what happens with this roster in the near future. He’s been nothing but a superb teammate since landing in Chicago, and I expect that to continue as long as he’s in town.
